‘Rebirth’ for fallen trees at Trivandrum Zoo
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fallen trees on the Museum compound have got a novel touch as they are now being used as benches for the visitors and as a means to enrich the animal and bird kingdom at the zoo. “Usually, the fall of trees is reported to the Forest Department and the procedures of its valuations and tender follows. After long, these trees will be removed from the area. It might take months or years to complete the procedure of valuation, revaluation and tenders. By then they would have began to rot or would have been eaten up by termites,” says Udayavarman, Director of Department of Museums and Zoos. He says, “Lately, a few rain trees had fallen down and with the permission granted from the Government authorities, we decided to make use of these trees for these purpose.” Instead of this long drawnout process of getting it removed from the property, they thought of making use of such wood in the making wooden benches for the visitors at the zoo and also to use hollow tree trunks for some of the animals. “As of now, the zoo has only one Malabar giant squirrel, but in the near future we plan to bring pairs of these squirrels to the zoo for breeding. As they will be many in number some of these trees with hollow trunks would be an apt wooden shelter for them especially in the summers,” says Dr Jacob Alexander, Veterinary Doctor at the Museum. Other trees are to be cut into desired shapes necessary for the making of wooden benches. |

Revised masterplan for the zoo soon
The Directorate of Museum and Zoos will submit a revised master plan for renovation of the city zoo in a week.
The team of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) reviewed the master plan and inspected the zoo on Thursday. According to the zoo authorities, the CZA team gave in principle agreement to the master plan. The zoo authorities are busy preparing the master plan by including the suggestions of the CZA team. They will present the revised master plan before the CZA by the end of this month. Zoo director K Udayvarman told ‘Express’ that the CZA team suggested some changes in the passage of visitors and arrangement of animals. “The animals will be segregated into various zones such as African zone, Western Ghat zone, exotic zones etc. The herbivorous animals belonging to the Western Ghat category will be included into the Western Ghat zone as suggested by the CZA team. The revised plan will be prepared in a week. It will be presented before the Central Zoo Authority in New Delhi after two weeks,” he said. The master plan proposes an arrangement of zoo animals on thematic basis. The current arrangement is based on taxonomy. The CZA had directed the authorities to specialise on Western Ghat animals. The master plan has been revised almost twice in the past. More animals such as white tigers, giraffes and zebras will be introduced as part of the zoo modernisation. Source: Indian Express |

The above news in EnglishThe city zoo has welcomed two new arrivals, the ‘White Stork’ and the ‘Travancore Tortoise.’ The white stork, a long-distance migratory bird, had stuck between electric lines in Attingal and was being taken care of by the Forest Department. Later, it was handed over to the zoo authorities here. The red-billed bird with white plumage and black featured wings has been allotted a pond within the enclosure where it flocks with its other enclosure-mates. Trying to be friendly, it walks to its neighbour’s pond. As it is only getting used to the fact that only one pond belongs to it, very often it experiences the dominating attitude shown by the seniors while trespassing. The other newcomer is Travancore’s own tortoise, outstanding for its yellow shell. This three-year-old, an endangered species, is safely placed in one of the enclosures next to the reptiles. There are also a few newborns at the zoo, the ‘Golden Pheasant’ and the ‘Blue Crown Pigeon.’ The three-day-old pheasant is the result of the 25-day egg incubation period at a temperature of 37 degrees Centigrade. As of now, the baby bird is wobbling within the brooder and will continue to be there for three months. The largest species of pigeon in the world, the blue crown is kept in an enclosure along with its parent birds. Twitching its head with a blue lacy crest, it entertains the crowd. Crop milk, a secretion disgorged from the mother’s mouth, is the food for the young. But even now the centre of attraction at the zoo is the 47-day-old African Cape Buffalo calf, Unnikuttan. “He is a slow learner. Even now he depends on the calf bucket for his feed,” says Dr Jacob Alexander, Zoo Vet. The hand-reared calf is given an oil bath daily to remove its skin peelings. Source |

Plan to shift Zoo outside city
![]() Space is at a premium at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, and the Government is on the look-out for an ideal location to move the zoo outside the city. Answering questions in the Assembly on Friday, Museum and Zoos Minister P K Jayalakshmi said the Government is searching for land to relocate the zoo, which shares 53 crammed acres with the Napier Museum and surrounding park. The Thrissur Zoo is in the process of being relocated in 306 acres at Puthoor, where a zoological park is to be developed, she said. Several members also pointed out that it would be advisable to move the zoo out of the city limits. The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo being under-staffed in terms of veterinarians, the department is examining a proposal to appoint one more vet and create posts for a biologist, public relations officer, lab technician and a livestock inspector, the Minister said in a written reply. The Central Zoo Authority has, in principle, approved the master plan for the development of the City Zoo, the Minister said. As part of streamlining facilities here, a central committee led by Central Zoo Authority member secretary B S Bonal had recommended sectioning off the animals and birds into three categories - those belonging to the Western Ghats, those from Africa and thirdly, other foreign varieties. K Muraleedharan, who is also the local MLA, opined in the House on Friday that this was unscientific. |

Present Zoo has no further land for growth. Hence good idea to relocate it to outskirts of city, provided land available... |
