More funds for botanical garden surrounding Napier Museum

An extension of financial grant to cover the entire area of 15 acres, rather than the current proposal of five acres, will help to make the botanical gardens surrounding the historic Napier Museum and Zoo one of the best in the country, Finance Minister K.M. Mani has said.

He promised the additional grant while inaugurating the beautification project of the botanical gardens at the Museum compound on Wednesday.

“Setting up rare plants as part of the beautification project will help attract major crowd, and the gardens could become a tourist destination,” said Mr. Mani.

Presiding over the function MLA K. Muraleedaran said the maintenance of the surroundings after the completion of the project should be given equal importance.

The initial Rs.5-crore project, which included construction of musical fountains, a theatre, glass house and cloak rooms, was scrapped due to lack of funds. The approved project, at Rs.2.56 crore, includes landscaping and lighting, planting of trees, construction of pathways and sign boards.

The approved project will be implemented by the Kerala Land Development Corporation (KLDC) and is expected to be completed in four months.

Trivandrum Zoo Devlp

Among the major projects identified by TDF and submitted to Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy and other ministers in 2011; the development of Zoo and Museum seems to be one project which is fast paced.

Happy to see majority of the items identified by us are in different stages of implementation.

Hats off to TDF...

It is a proud moment for us travandrumites that at least one organization here in TVM works for our city. Kudos to the silent forumers here, who are also a part of TDF.

Get ready for a pollution-free ride in zoo

Visitors to the city zoo can look forward to a pollution-free ride in brand new battery-operated electric vehicles, which will be launched here soon.

Minister for Tourism A.P. Anil Kumar joined the zoo officials for a test drive of the new 14-seater vehicle at a demo drive held on the zoo premises on Friday.

Speaking to media persons after the test drive, the Minister said that the vehicles, said to be eco-friendly and non-polluting, were well suited for use in the zoo as they did not cause any noise or air pollution. The main aim was to help elderly visitors to the zoo, who earlier had to depend on wheelchairs, and provide them a comfortable ride.

When the battery is fully charged, the vehicle can cover up to 110 km at a maximum speed of 55 km/hr and the operational cost comes to just 75 paisa a km. Additional plug-in devices can be used to programme the vehicle to control the speed. The vehicle costs between Rs.5 lakh and Rs.15 lakh depending on the model, which ranges from 4 to 14 seater.

The vehicles are manufactured by a Chennai-based company and is promoted and marketed in the State through the Small Industries Development Corporation.

P. Gopi, an official of the company, said that similar vehicles were supplied to the Hyderabad zoo and Delhi airport. The company had supplied the vehicles to States such as Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Karnataka.

The vehicles could be used to transport people and cargo. Additional facilities such as audio guide could be provided in the vehicle if needed, he said.

The zoo officials are yet to decide on the number of vehicles to be purchased and the ticket rate for the same.

“We need a minimum of four vehicles. The number of vehicles and cost of tickets are still under negotiation and will be finalised in two weeks,” said zoo Director K. Udayavarman.

Trial run of electric buggy held in zoo

A demo drive of an electric buggy was held on the zoo compound here on Friday. Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar conducted the demo drive of the buggy, which will soon be introduced in the Zoo. Zoo authorities are planning to purchase around four buggies.

Anil Kumar, accompanied by other zoo officials, drove the vehicle in the zoo on Friday morning. The electric buggy can accommodate minimum 20 persons. “The demo drive of the buggy was successful. We are in touch with the manufacturing company regarding the price and other details. A report will soon be submitted to the government. A decision on the number of buggies to be purchased will be made only after the government approval. Currently, we are planning to buy four buggies,” Zoo director K Udayvarman said.

The buggy was introduced after Minister for Zoo and Museums P K Jayalakshmi got complaints against the zoo being unfriendly for differently-abled persons. “Not just differently-abled, others too can use this facility,” Udayvarman said.

Spread over 35 acres, the zoo, one of the oldest in the country, is set for a major makeover with suggestions from the Central Zoo Authority.
