New Natural History Museum in city
Come 2013 the state capital will have another attraction in the form of a state-of-the-art Natural History Museum. The museum will be set up by the State Forests and Wildlife Department on its PTP Nagar campus.
The Department expects to open the museum for the public by 2013-end. The project will be one of the largest of its kind in the state, and would be noted for innovative concepts in museum design, officials said. The Rs 1-crore museum will have 21 sections with the larger ones on mammals and birds. The theme of the project is an educative wildlife experience and the visitors will be offered an ‘experience’ with the help of latest audio visual facilities, the officials said. “It will not be just seeing a stuffed animal. One could learn a lot, including their habitats, sounds etc. A vast collection of sound recordings of animals and birds will be a unique feature of the museum,” they said. An exclusive section on nocturnal wildlife and another on human evolution are among the highlights, besides a photo gallery. The museum is planned on the two-storeyed building on the PTP Nagar campus which once housed a mini natural history museum. The valuables under the possession of the Forest Department, especially the crores-worth sandalwood collections seized during raids, will be another attraction of the museum.. http://newindianexpress.com/cities/t...cle1285987.ece

I only wish that this was integrated with the main Natural History Museum that's part of the Museum-Zoo complex, this would be a great complimentary addition, which would ensure a much greater visitor traffic than being in an isolated location in PTP Nagar would.

![]() The City Zoo welcomed a new member on Tuesday afternoon. A baby calf was born to bison Sushama. With the delivery of the baby calf, the number of bisons in the zoo has risen to four. In addition to the two bisons Prithvi and Sushama, which were brought from Mysore zoo last year, there is Sundari, which was rescued from forest. http://newindianexpress.com/cities/thiruvananthapuram |

All about birds on museum campus
Soon, visitors to the zoo and museum in the city will be able to identify the unusual species of birds that have made the lush flora and towering, ancient trees in the museum campus their home. A collection of observations that city-based nature lover’s group Warblers and Waders have made over a decade is being shared with the Natural History Museum, which will soon appear as a booklet. The booklet will solely focus on birds that have made home in the trees in the campus. Superintendent of the Museum S. Abu said the publication was currently in the preparatory stage and would give more space to pictures. “It will include detailed descriptions on their physical characteristics and where exactly on ground they can be found, thus serving as the perfect guide for a sightseer here,” said Mr. Abu. He attributed much of the credit to the Warblers and Waders group, which conducted a number of bird surveys along with seminars and workshops on environmental conservation and periodic documentation of flora and fauna. Coordinator of the organisation C. Sushanth said a report was submitted to the Museum authorities two weeks ago. Having been in existence for the past 20 years, the findings of their surveys might have fluctuated, but the contents of the report dealt with the avian species found most commonly in the past few years, Mr. Susanth said. “For instance, the ‘Darter’ or ‘Snake Bird’, was found to be nested in various parts of the city, but from 2004, they moved to the Museum grounds,” he said, adding that this bird figures among the highlights of their records as it belonged to the endangered list. “While over 150 have been spotted here, the book will contain details of 60 that are found most frequently here,” said Mr. Sushanth. He also said, along with a couple of corrections that the Museum officials would add to the report, the book would be a well-presented analysis of the bird species, supplemented with background and history or how long they existed here, and why they are less spotted now. To popularise bird-watching, the Sunday Bird Watch was organised on October 28 by the World Wide Fund-India. The bird-watchers in the city also have their calendars marked, as the annual Kerala Bird Race has been scheduled for November 18. |

Trivandrum Zoo inspired Life of Pi
Looks like the world-wide best-seller and Booker Prize winning novel, Life of Pi, was inspired by our very own Zoo.
![]() Read more here. The sad part is even though this was known since 2002, none of the powers-that-be at Kerala Tourism or the Zoo Directorate seem to be aware of this marketing gold-mine, or if they are aware, seem to be the least bit interested in using this fact to attract a few million very curious, very valuable tourists from across the world. ![]()
