NSSF to Construct the University of Dodoma
NSSF had the privilege of being the first entity to start construction of the new university by building hostels for 5,000 students as a replica of the University of Dar es Salaam’s Mabibo Hostels.

Before the start of construction, the only building existing in the university premises was the monumental Chimwaga Conference Hall. The remaining vast land was covered by thick bush with only foot paths used by grazers of cattle and goats.

There were no beacons to guide the setting of buildings and the topography of the area was not yet mapped on paper. Infact, the first task was to choose the spot at which the hostels will stand and thereafter clearance of the bush would start.

In the construction of the University of Dodoma, National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has been allocated the task of implementing the erection of buildings and associated infrastructure for the college of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Phase 1
In consultation with the university administration, it was decided that the first hostels would be located just in front of the highest hill in the vicinity of Chimwaga hill. The work of replication of Mabibo Hostels in Dodoma started in November 2007.

The work was to take seventy weeks from start to completion, but due to pressure from the university, the contractor was required to shorten the time to forty-seven weeks so that the 5,000 student hostel could be used in the 2008/9 academic year. The hostels were completed and occupied by the students on the 29th September 2008.

Phase Two
The second phase of construction started on site in July 2008 and involved construction of ;-
1.2 cafeterias
2.24 classrooms
3.18 mini lecture theatres
4.186 room academic office buildings
5.A dispensary
6.2 main lecture theatres
7.A library
8.A linguistic laboratory

The completion dates are expected to be between September and December 2010. The works involve construction of hostels for the remaining 15,000 students, sports grounds, administration office and replication of the facilities constructed in phase two. Phoenix Assurance to put up a 17 storey Complex in Dar

Dar Es Salaam — THE Phoenix Assurance Tanzania Limited will from next March put up a multi-billion 17-storey house in Dar es Salaam.

The plans come amid real estate experts' concern that Dar es Salaam rental charges continued to be the most expensive in the entire East African region. Phoenix General Manager Subash Wadhawan said in an interview that all plans had been completed, including drawing of the envisaged building.

However, he could not state the exact cost of the building, saying it was being worked out.

"We have applied for a building permit which will any time from now be issued by the relevant authorities to pave way for commencement of the building between March and April, next year," he said.

The building which will take 3 years to be completed will have various floors for uses, including two floors for car parking, equipped with modern car lifts to and from the parking areas.

Business parks and all other trading apartments as well as residential floors will be available in the estimated 13,000 square-metre building. He said the significance of the project was that it showed the great confidence local shareholders had in the company.

Experts say the Tanzania construction sector is currently contributing between 6 and 7 per cent to Gross Domestic Product while it grows at between 12 and 15 per cent, up from 9.0 per cent recorded in previous years.

Substantial investments from both local and foreign investments in the construction industry have greatly increased the performance of the industry. The coming up of the 17-storey building by Phoenix Assurance Tanzania Limited will greatly help in curbing problems of office space in the commercial business district.

this article was published in December 2009 and the constructions has not started. But recently I saw them putting up their logo board at a site in upanga...thats a good sign that the project is still on

NSSF to construct 15 storey building in Arusha

From MARC NKWAME in Arusha, 31st July 2010 @ 11:50, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 271

THE National Social Security Fund (NSSF) plans to construct a 15- storey complex along Nyerere Road in the municipality of Arusha, just a stone throw from the plot which Parastal Provident Fund (PPF) has earmarked for the same purpose.

The NSSF 'skyscraper' construction is already underway. The building will be built on Plot Number 1, Block 2 by the bank of river Themi where former 'Matongee' Club used to operate. The area is adjacent to the Arusha Hotel and opposite the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral.

The new building, according to the fund's zonal manager, Mr Mathew Mwakatobe, will be known as NSSF Commercial Building Complex. The PPF is reportedly also planning to build a similar skyscraper in the same area along Nyerere Road (former Old Moshi).

“The construction project is already underway, the landscape levelled, foundation dug, while more machinery and other building materials and equipment are being shipped to the project site to complement the existing ones to facilitate construction,” the NSSF Manager, Mr Mwakatobe explained.

The building was designed by MD Consultants. Site mobilization started in May, this year and the project is expected to be completed in two years. By the time it is completed in 2012, the project is estimated to cost 27.3bn/-.

The building, in addition to giving Arusha a facelift, will also provide state of the art office space and conference facilities for institutions and companies. It will also house the National Social Security Fund operations in the Northern Zone. The aim of the project, according to the Chief Manager, is to invest NSSF members’ contribution to gain profit that would be spent on other activities and meet members’ claims.

“NSSF is geared towards its presence being felt in Arusha. We are also co-operating with the Arusha Municipal Council through investments so that we can reach our goal of making Arusha a true Gem of Africa,” Mr Mwakatobe said.

China Railway Jiachang Engineering Company Limited, who are already working on various construction projects in the country, have been appointed as the project contractors.

Of course, Oil is not the means of development.

But i said that because It has opened up Oil blocks on Tanganyika Lake and Indian Ocean to companies.

I think they shouldn't worry about Oil since Uganda is to start pumping and DRC has just started drilling to increase production in far West and has offered blocks in East including our part on Tanganyika, we could just send pipilines there.

But Tanzanians are so proud, they would really hate to depend on trouble maker Uganda Regime (sorry, no offense ) and DRC's unstable that changes colours every few years.
