Michigan State Police cars aka "the blue goose" have used the same design since the 50's with a distinctive blue color, single red gumball and the "shark fin" on the hood. You see a bright pinkish light in the distance or behind you know who it is

Is "Polis" Swedish and "Poliisi" Finnish? Would every vehicle have the other language on the other side?

Yes it is. All the vehicles seem to have the text in both languages.

The public procurement process for new Swedish police cars resulted in quite a surprise: the Swedish police won't buy Swedish this time. Instead, the standard equipment will be the VW Passat. I quess Volvo didn't offer them a good enough deal.

Is there political risk in not buying Swedish cars? I can't imagine any American jurisdiction going with imports. If Sweden did want to use Swedish cars regardless of cost (or only let Swedish manufacturers bid), would the EU permit that?

The Crown Victoria was built in Canada (notice my use of the past tense), the NYPD has a few Nissan Altimas on patrol, and GM's latest and greatest, the Chevy Caprice, is built in Australia where they've already been selling it as a Holden for years.

I knew I'd regret that statement.

Well, I can't imagine the state of Michigan, for example, using anything foreign-made.

But I'm not sure Canadian counts as foreign-made. (I mean, yes, but it's all U.S. brands...doesn't stand out like a Mitsubishi or Beemer would.)

It'll be interesting to see the public reaction. The police already use a number of foreign - even American - cars, but that is for special purposes. The Passat will be new standard equipment as far as I can understand.

On the other hand, the goverment stopped using Volvos years ago for transporting the Prime Minister and other cabinet members. The reason again was cost related, it was too expensive to buy Volvos with bullet proof glass, especially when BMW, Mercedes and Audi have security cars like that in their standard line up.

But I imagine one of those classic "We are protecting the tax payers money" vs "We can't afford not to buy Swedish" debates to come out of this decision...

It helps if you have no national car industry, which means purchase decisions are based on what you really need, not protectionist politics.

[off-topic, mild political tangent] There are times (recessions) and reasons (protecting jobs or, if you prefer, preventing auto workers from becoming collectors of unemployment benefits and, hence, a tax burden) that a bit of "protectionism" is completely appropriate. If the cost to government of unemployment benefits, and of the damage to the economy when a manufacturing town collapses, were taken into account when deciding which bidder really offers the best deal....[end tangent].

Any particular reason why the new Megane has blue and yellow stripes instead of red and white?

I guess it would be visibility,. Those yellow reflective stripes stand oud a lot more than the older white/red did.
Red and white are more common colours, used in other cars, buildings and scenery. That's why red/white was less visible.

Almost all highway patrols in Bulgaria are with standard cars - Opel Astra 1.4 (12V?) or 1.6 (16V?)

There are also some Lada Niva 4x4, but very few. Usually in municipalities with mountaineos terrain, and they usually don't appear on highways.

Lately they started buying Citroen Xsara instead of Opel Astra.

There are also very few BMWs and were mostly used for diplomatic convoys etc, but occasionally they appear on highways as patrols too.

Other brands and models sometimes are used too, but they are "exotics" (like Porsches,Mercedes etc.) and not used for highway patrol, but other official occasions.

For example riot police uses Land Rover Defenders, they can be seen on around football stadiums on derbies with a lot of hooligans, or on political rallies.

Question: was there any specific reason that the Russian police would run American (Canadian) cars; especially large sedans vs. locally made vehicles or at least something German i.e. BMW or Mercedes?
