Arena Pernambuco Construction enters the foundations phase this week

New stage shall be executed together with land leveling work, says consortium

The construction of the Arena Pernambuco, the stadium that shall represent the city of Recife in the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, shall this week proceed with the start of work on the foundations. Even though the machines are still working on land leveling, the engineer from the Specific Purpose Society for the Arena Pernambuco, Jayro Poggi, stands by his forecast.

“There is no need to end the leveling to start work on the foundations. Indeed, there shall come a time when several stages of the work shall take place at the same time”, the person responsible for the work points out.

Even though the machines are working full throttle on the site of 52 hectares, there is still a long path to trail to arrive at the project planned for the stadium. According to Mr. Poggi, the schedule is running on time, even with the rainfall that was above average in the month of January.

In the current stage of construction of the Arena Pernambuco, there are machines and also lorries strewn around the whole worksite. Some 350 workers are working on the site, but this figure should increase further in the surveying few months, as the work progresses.

The entire technical team has set up on the worksite, where the administration offices, as also the engineering and security departments, are operating. Alongside the offices, sheds are being constructed for use as a cafeteria and storage area.

The construction of the new arena has been budgeted at R$ 464 million (€ 202.60 million). If we add the operational costs, then the total price tag shall be R$ 532 million (€ 232.29 million).

With the process of preparation of the executive project currently under way, some adaptation are being made to the project. However, according to the engineer from SPE Arena Pernambuco, which represents the construction firm Odebrecht, the initial concept of the project was preserved: “We are strictly following the FIFA requirements book. This is our guide.”

As green as Pernambuco

Excellence in environmental sustainability is increasingly present in major works on the planet. Besides having turned a requirement of society, the issue is also seen as a bargaining chip of the major undertakings of this century. FIFA, for example, created the Green Goal Program, aiming to identify possible environmental impacts of stadiums for the World Cup, and require renewable technologies. The demand has occurred in South Africa, and will happen in Brazil in 2014. Although the focus in the arena for the World Pernambuco is basically about the progress of the work millionaire or negotiation with the big clubs of Recife, the project also foresees the use of new technologies self-sustaining. One will be an unprecedented worldwide.

After five years of development, Braskem - petrochemical arm of Odebrecht, which leads the consortium of the local arena - has finally created plastic chairs made from a material very different from oil, the raw material used for decades. The 46,214-seat stadium in São Lourenço da Mata will be made from cane sugar. Greener and Pernambuco, impossible.

The green plastic (biopolietileno) is the result of a process from the dehydration of ethanol from sugar cane, producing a raw material 100% renewable. Until the production of this plastic is cleaner, with a reduction in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The first version - which has been used in the automotive industry and cosmetics - was launched in June 2007. The following year, was used in the design of the trophy GP Brazil of Formula 1, in a piece designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Now, with the international certificate of recognition of the effectiveness, Odebrecht will implant the idea in the stadium. The first industry of the company for this purpose, valued at $ 500 million, is being built in Rio Grande do Sul

In Pernambuco, this new chair, which despite the name "green" in an ecological reference will, in fact, the color red - is the highlight of the sustainable design arena. The stadium also has socio-environmental best known as the use of solar energy, water reuse solutions, ventilation and sewage treatment, since the stadium will be very close to Capibaribe River, which skirts the grounds of 270 acres.

All this was necessary so that the committee could place before the commencement of works, the license in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED, an acronym in English), required by Fifa. The certification for sustainable buildings is issued by the American Council for Green Building (USGBC, the acronym in English). The study on the rationalization of resources has been around since 1998 and has already approved some 14 000projects worldwide.

"The durability of this new plastic is identical to traditional plastic, but with a clean production that uses renewable energy. With that meets the criteria of FIFA, and go beyond, sustainable fazendouma arena. It will be a place that will not treat the public as a fan but as a customer, "says engineering director of Odebrecht, Eric Joseph, who also emphasizes the preservation of 600 acres of green space on site. "This green area will be reclaimed. With all this, do we want a location that will receive visits during the week as a museum, in a family environment," related director. The sugar plantations in the forest zone to the bleachers, the pioneering step of environmental responsibility in the State Cup.

Sunflowers technological

The City Cup can have all your electricity consumption produced by photovoltaic cells. In a simple translation: solar energy, clean energy. Initially, the idea was to put four wind turbines around the stadium. The propellers would generate about 1,600 kilowatts of energy. The engineers of Odebrecht in joints that have lasted over a year, scrapped the model and opted for placing plates of solar panels. With this, the project of producing enough energy for air-conditioned arena has been raised to a power of up to 49,500 kilowatts, enough to light 20,000 homes. To get an idea of what this means, suffice it to say that the megaproject Pernambuco - with a deadline for completion by 2020 - provides for the construction of nine thousand homes.

In the gear stage, the water will be used in kitchens and locker rooms will be heated by this energy precisely. The reduction in the consumption of conventional energy, the network Celpe, may be up to 85%. Part of the plates should be on the roof of the stadium bleachers, as will happen with Palmeiras Stadium - scene of Cuiabá / MT for the World Cup in 2014, another project with the label "green." According to the director of Odebrecht, Eric Joseph, there is the possibility of putting part of the cells around the square sport, highlighting the aesthetic side.

Another point for this initiative would be technical, because, for better capture sunlight, the board needs to be retractable, following the movement of the Sun "would be something like a sunflower, for example, to increase our energy production. This is being studied for an engineering department. We have time to set the location, "says Eric, an enthusiast for the idea. These cells fotovotáicas will transform into electric power for almost half of sunlight on the ground.

Solar Energy

The plates of solar energy could generate all the electricity consumed by the stadium in the medium term, with the deployment of photovoltaic cells in all the coverage - capacity of 49,500 kilowatts. Engineers are still testing the component which will be used.

Rain

The automatic lawn irrigation of the new stadium will be done with stored water from rainfall. The water is treated before, although not recommended for use in humans.

Chairs

Produced from sugar cane, chairs "green" can be recycled in the event of depreciation of the crowd. Durability is exactly the same chairs made from petroleum.

Bathrooms

As happens on the pitch, the toilets and changing rooms of the arena - including the unique local athletes - use rainwater stored by the system of the stadium. The sewage is treated in the same complex.

LED

The lamp with LED technology, which can last up to 50,000 hours, will compose the lighting of the stadium. Consumption is 80% smaller than the incandescent light bulb. The product uses no heavy metals in manufacturing.

Wind

The stadium beside the highway BR-408 will have special openings to spread the ventilation in the stadium, with the aim of increasing comfort, without giving room for the construction of a "heat island".

Entrance to the arena 3D

There is great expectation that the 2014 World Cup will bring innovations to the sports organization in the state, in addition to improving infrastructure throughout the city, mostly. In football, it will not be restricted to a modern multipurpose arena, but also the behavior of the fans, with new habits. One of them should be deployed to the ease of buying tickets, because going to the box office in St. Lawrence, 19 miles from Ground Zero, will not be the most common attitude of the lives of fans. No queues or uncertainty as to the seat. Instead, a few clicks on the phone with the right to view a three dimensional (3D) of all 46,214 seats available. All. The vision of the seat in row 5 of the F ring than not pleased? Then just follow the online surfing with two clicks of the chair to the angle F, located in row 13 of the bottom ring. Improved? Then, after you register via credit card, the purchase is finalized. It seems remote from reality, but this process should be part of our everyday lives.

The software with this degree of simulated images of the arena was completed in December 2009 by the company Soft.Zone Pernambuco, who introduced him to Odebrecht, the leader of the consortium for the construction and operation of the future stadium. Software II (Property Interactive) consumed three years on staff, who invested $ 220,000 in equipment, research and testing to complete the program. Initially, the idea was to compose a service to construction companies with the same 3D view, but only to show apartments to customers.

During a meeting in August 2010, however, the sector responsible for the City Cup was interested and asked a "beta" for the arena. The Soft.Zone will transform the ground floor of the arena (in 2D) in three dimensions. According to Diogo Parreiras, one of the owners of Soft.Zone, you can access the future site of the virtual arena by phone - or any other computer. Enough to have an Internet connection.

"You will not need any application on the mobile version (cellular). At best, the view is more restricted in the case of older phones. In an iPhone, for example, the visual is the same as a computer," said Parreira. This ID will also serve to increase security at the games. With the online registry of all the fans in the stadium, the identification is complete, in case of any incident. "The ticket is only the first phase of 3D. We'll also show you where are the restrooms, emergency exits and ambulances," he said. That is, besides the sale easier, there will be a kind of 'BBB Arena "in the audit. In fact, new habits.

Learn more

The 46,214 seats have 3-D images, with a "trip" around the virtual stadium. The fan could give visibilidadento.

The games scheduled, which could reach 60 per year, will be previously registered. A compra poderá ser feita com antecedência. The purchase can be made in advance.

To the extent that the tickets are sold, the stadium will be "filled" with virtual fans by changing the 3D visual to maximum capacity.

The complex will be mapped in 3D. Even the parking lot, the distance of the vacancy in the seat can be marked as Google Maps.

AEG Facilities - New LA Live in Brasil

Far beyond football

Any fan of Pernambuco already in the stadium wanted to see his team play a World Cup, an impossible dream, considering the current infrastructure of the Island Retreat, Arruda or Afflicted. The City Cup, in São Lourenço da Mata, will have a custom arena for the World Cup 2014, project that was dubbed a white elephant. The stadium needs of the sport. The City Cup is more than football and going to mess with the entire life of Greater Recife. Inspired by a business concept that has revitalized the downtown Los Angeles, will bring together hotels, bars and luxury residences.

The plane ride lasts at least 17 hours, depending on the chosen route. The 10,000 km from Los Angeles to Recife become routine for Brazilian and American suits. They hold meetings, monitor works, contract research and undertake technical visits. Studying various businesses, a world of possibilities: bars, restaurants and cinemas hipsters, hotel executive, luxury residential, university and even private shopping mall. The search is for the parts that best fit in assembling the City Cup, in São Lourenço da Mata, a billion dollar bet to turn the arena of the World 2014 in the flagship of a large complex of events and entertainment, a billion-dollar project beyond football.

The City Cup, until July, will get its official name and its components will be defined. The starting point is the concept, not the formula of LA Live, a set in Central Los Angeles who has received $ 2.5 billion in investments since 1997, when the risk was only on paper. JC went to the States to know the complex.

LA Live is not for everyone. The exclusivity, quality service, luxury and comfort creating a world apart, where each area is thought to be functional and visits, a unique experience. The boards with ads, and source of profit, they function as decorative elements outdoors.

For many, it is difficult to transpose the concept of a complex in advanced stages of deployment, the United States, for the City Cup, located on the border of São Lourenço da Mata with Camaragibe Jaboatão Recife Guararapes. The land was occupied by squatters.

A year and nine months after the official announcement of Brazil to host the World Cup, many of Pernambuco have misgivings about the use of the arena after the World Cup and claimed the need for its construction.

"I think all this could become a white elephant. Only if they had not seen a very good proposal to the clubs. I read that the Náutico topa come up. If the Santa Cruz and Sport topariam not know, "says the musician Jehovah Marinho de Souza, 33.

Odebrecht and manages the critical task of solving the project financially since signing on 15 June last year, a contract with the state government to build, operate and maintain the stadium Cup 2014, 46,000 seats, for 33 years . The contract is a grant funded, not considered viable business alone and therefore transformed into public-private partnership (PPP). Pernambuco per year will pay $ 4 million to Odebrecht.

But the arena will occupy only 52 acres of the 250 all terrain. Therefore, Odebrecht will spend £ 532 million stadium and a total of more than $ 1.6 billion to develop the City Cup.

For lack of business experience, last October signed a partnership with AEG World Wide giant world of music, sports, entertainment and owner of LA Live. Since then, they created a bridge between air-Recife-Los Angeles. AEG, through its various divisions and affiliated companies, will work in planning, development and operation of complex Pernambuco.

LA Live has 40 hectares, about one sixth of the City Cup, and has a multipurpose arena for sporting events - like basketball and ice hockey - and shows large, a set of homes and hotels from $ 1 billion , 21 thousand square meters of commercial cinemas, nightclubs, 13 restaurants and 14 cine. The complex American receives 12 million visitors a year.

"That does not mean we have to have all these parts. But we think it's important to have more than just a not to be so dependent on football, "says Executive Vice President of Real Estate Development for AEG, Ted Tanner.

The arena has to be ready Dec. 31 2012 for the Confederations Cup in June 2013. However, the goal is that part of the complex to leave the paper until the World Cup, to use the event as a showcase. "My expectation is that we get close to 50% of the project until 2014. But everything will depend on the results of studies and the amount of work needed there, "says the CEO of the Consortium Arena Pernambuco, Marcos Lessa. "Anyway, we want the City to 2014 World Cup has already been born as a city, not only as an arena," he says.

City Cup unveiled

The City Cup, has been named as the urban center that is being developed from the Arena of Pernambuco for the 2014 World Cup, had his plan of occupation, or master plan (master plan) in its first version, presented on Friday Friday by the Consortium Business Arena Pernambuco, formed by two companies Odebrecht. The bill, signed by the multinational Aecom will be finalized in August and officially launched to the market in September.

The area of 240 hectares in the southwest quadrant of the metropolitan area of Recife will gather in neighboring sectors entertainment, housing (7,800 dwellings), businesses, hotels and conventions and also educational campus. The idea is to build green belts between areas, filling-in of the water elements of the current topography, including lakes. Altogether there will be 80 hectares of green area (33% of total), including parks and reserved area.

To illustrate what can be the space, the CEO of the Consortium Business Arena Pernambuco, Marcos Lessa, mentioned that the Park Jaqueira has 6 acres and said the new location can be a like a Casa Forte, but much more and more green space between buildings as much as in homes.

However what Lessa defined as the heart of the City Cup is the entertainment center, which at 290 square meters will eg theater, cinema, bars, restaurants, outdoor mall. From there, the people will take no more than 10 minutes to get going anywhere else, from the arena at one extreme to the residential area, on the other. The radius is 450 meters.

The idea is that entertainment has to offer consumers constant - the people, people who will work in different offices, hotel guests (with a forecast of 350 rooms), which is adjacent to the convention center. Moreover, in the days of play, it is expected that the whole family can address the City Cup, because even those who do not like football will have other activities ahead. "It will be an entertainment complex to make a family event. A city for people to come earlier and leave later, enjoying the hours before and after the game," Lessa said.

"The City Cup will be the leveraging of the region west of the RMR, which has much more to grow. The main attraction is a city of entertainment and housing with a large green space with attractive as, unlike common in Recife, which is a planned city and a little vertical, forming cliffs" said Marcos Lessa.

Apart from the Arena Cup, which is already under construction, the consortium hopes that the work of other parts of the City Cup start between May and June 2011. The meetings with potential investors are already taking place, including outside of Brazil. The world president of NEC, a company of information technology (IT), will meet the governor Eduardo Campos on Monday.
