i´ve read that they want to develop the infrastructure/economy at this part of Recife. They want the stadium to be the "engine" for the socialy weak region. And they want to built a housing space for ca. 5.000 households around the stadium

Find out more about the three-banded armadillo, Brazilian animal that has served as inspiration for the World Cup mascot

For the Caatinga Association, non-governmental organisation that campaigned in favour of the animal, the choice consists in a victory for all those who defend the environment

The three-banded armadillo is a mammal that may reach 50cm in length and weigh 1.2kg. The little animal does not dig burrows, but bends over into the shape of a ball to defend itself. Just another animal of the Brazilian fauna before, the three-banded armadillo will shoot to world fame this Sunday (16.09): it has been chosen as the 2014 FIFA World Cup mascot.

» Official World Cup mascot introduced to the world

The Caatinga Association, non-profit organisation that works in the preservation of the Caatinga biome (located in Brazil's northeast, characterised by vegetation adapted to a low volume of rainfall) was in charge of the campaign aimed at choosing the three-banded armadillo as the mascot. “We have a great opportunity to contribute, through the World Cup, to the environment. We believe that the three-banded armadillo is the necessary spokesperson to protect the Caatinga",

“We noticed that the campaign had a lot of potential and decided to make it official at the beginning of 2012. We drafted a 20 page document and forwarded it to the Ministry of Sport, to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and FIFA. The three-banded armadillo is 100% Brazilian and the World Cup is an opportunity to publicise the importance of preserving the species", explains Rodrigo

Official World Cup Mascot introduced to the world

FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) are excited to introduce one of the most high-profile ambassadors of the 2014 FIFA World Cup: a unique Brazilian three-banded armadillo (the Tolypeutes tricinctus)

The mascot was officially launched as part of Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo’s weekly Fantástico entertainment show, where he was welcomed by Brazilian football legend and member of the LOC Management Board, Ronaldo.

“I’m delighted to welcome such an important member to the 2014 team,” said Ronaldo. “The mascot will play a key ambassadorial role in the next two years. I’m sure he will inspire many young football fans in Brazil and all over the world with the great passion which he has for the sport and for his country.”

The introduction followed a week of activities in which the mascot made a series of unofficial visits all over Brazil. This included the distribution of two thousand and fourteen blue balls representing his unique blue shell on the Boa Viagem beach in Recife, a meeting with his new friend Ronaldo in São Paulo as well as high-profile introductions to Brazilian football fans through digital appearances during several live football broadcasts. The Official Mascot also has his own official song, “Tatu Bom de Bola”, sung by Brazilian music star Arlindo Cruz (watch the video).

The final mascot design was chosen after FIFA and the LOC had analysed 47 different proposals created by six different Brazilian agencies. The designs were further analysed through extensive research carried out amongst its primary target audience: Brazilian children between the ages of 5 and twelve, with the favourite being the armadillo, created by 100% Design.

“The fact that the three-banded armadillo is a vulnerable species is very fitting,” said FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke. “One of the key objectives through the 2014 FIFA World Cup is to use the event as a platform to communicate the importance of the environment and ecology. We are glad to be able to do so with the help of a mascot who I’m sure will be much-loved, not only in Brazil, but all over the world.”

The Brazilian population will now have the chance to give the Official Mascot a name by taking part in a public voting campaign which will run up until the middle of November. The three options, which were decided upon after a vote by a high-profile judging committee including Bebeto, Arlindo Cruz, Thalita Rebouças, Roberto Duailibi and Fernanda Santos, are Amijubi – a representation of friendliness and joy – and two names which link to the ecological message, Fuleco and Zuzeco.

The Official Mascot is the latest in a line of iconic characters who have gone down in World Cup history. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Zakumi in South Africa in 2010, Germany’s Goleo in 2006 and all the way back to the days of World Cup Willie in 1966, the mascot is one of the key visuals of a FIFA World Cup, providing FIFA, the LOC and other stakeholders with a strong and exciting brand asset through which promotional campaigns can be activated and target audiences can be engaged.

Arena Pernambuco - Recife

Sustainability

The project of the Pernambuco Arena has provided for solar power and rainwater to be captured, as well as the use of natural ventilation and the management of solid waste. Sustainable measures are already being adopted by the construction works: the building site has its own sewage station; there is collective garbage collection, prevention against smoking and the lorries’ wheels are washed with reused water.

The goal is to manage to be awarded the LEED sustainable certificate, issued by the non-governmental organisation Green Building Council (CGB).

Urban mobility

According to the Responsibility Matrix, the main urban mobility project being developed by Recife City Hall is an intervention on the roadway called the Mangue Road, with investments in the order of R$ 433.2 million (R$ 331 million from federal financing and R$ 102 as a municipal financial matching action).

The Mangue Road is made up of lanes for vehicles, pavements for pedestrians and cycle lanes, with two overpasses being built; as well as eight bridges, two connecting lanes and the enlargement of some of the lanes. The express way will not have traffic lights or junctions.

Benchmark on the pitch

It is not the first time that Recife plays host to a World Cup. In 1950, the city hosted the match between the United States and Chile at the Stadium at Retiro Island. It was the only municipality in Brazil’s northeast that was included in the competition.

Choosing the city as a 2014 host is a sign of its football traditions. Since 1915, the state has held its own championships. The city’s most important teams are Sport, Santa Cruz and Náutico.

Oldest capital

Founded in 1561, Recife is the biggest urban cluster in the northeast region and Brazil’s oldest state capital. With almost 1.5 million inhabitants, the city is characterised by a happy combination of beaches, an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, and culture and history that attract millions of tourists. For visitors, Recife is an inexhaustible source of attractions. From the boat trips on the Capibaribe River and its centuries old bridges, to the visits to historical landmarks, the typical cuisine, handcrafts and the hospitality of the people from Pernambuco.
