Warsaw - Still So Beautiful

The Warsaw Uprising Museum just unveiled a 3 -D reconstruction of Warsaw in ruins after WWII - check it out, it's amazing at: http://www.miastoruin.pl

Despite all that tragic history, although a bit shabby in areas, Warsaw surprised me when I visited her in May of this year.

The Old Town is continually being restored and reconstructed. Last year, the Krakowskie Przedmiesce or Krakow Street underwent a massive redesign and is now a huge granite-paved pedestrian-preferred precinct that links most of the important landmarks of old Warsaw.

The new Chopin Museum combines high-tech modern with the old Ostrogowski Castle

Stalin's gift to Warsaw - the wedding cake style Stalinist Baroque Palace of Culture. This massive structure along with parade grounds was built on the former downtown of Warsaw

Plaques like this are plentiful in Warsaw commemorating sites where Nazi forces murdered people in the streets - these were called lapanki or round-ups and were used to terrify people during the occupation.

Here are some varied photos of Warsaw outside the touristy Old Town and gives a good feel for how most of Warsaw looks like. These areas survived the war unscathed.

Warsaw's parks - Saski, Krasinski, Lazienki, Wilanow etc - are amazing, among the best in Europe and need no preface or explanation.

Thanks. The weather wasn't ideal for pictures overall. Lots of rain and cloud the few days I was there. Didn't get a chance to photograph some of the spectacular new neighbourhoods and the new downtown(s). Next time.
