I think an LA freeway system with 3+4+4+3 lanes would greatly reduce congestion. The expresslane would only interchange on freeway to freeway interchange then.

What you're saying now is that this road has 400 lanes. Probably incorrect

It should be 5+4+5+4, actually.

Notice the grade-separated weaving lanes in the upper part of the picture, on the right of the motorway. We have a few of those in the Netherlands too, they're necessary if there is excessive weaving between two motorways or exits.

There was some news about a year ago that Dubai traffic has overtaken Cairo in absolute terms of congestion (while Dubai has far fewer inhabitants).

The size of a car doesn't really matter that much in traffic jams. It's the amount of traffic mostly. Only trucks make a difference because they are a couple of car-equivalents. (I believe they calculate 2.5 cars in the Netherlands)

That's not weaving, its just a transfer between collector and express lanes. There's a ton of em along the route.

Its 5+4x5+4 because in that image, the highway is nearing an interchange where many of the lanes diverge.

Toll plazas outside Paris can get pretty crowded after holidays, when Parisians are headed back home:

(This one is on the A10 northbound, I believe. Correct me, if I'm wrong.)

You can never build enough lanes at toll booths for the summer peaks. That's why I don't travel along such roads in the summer.

why not?

the usual 2sec time gap between cars on a motorway lane (full of cars) rises to about 30sec on a toll booth lane...

so you only have to give 15 tollbooth lane for every motorway lane...

so, e.g. on a 2x3 motorway you need 90 toll booth lane...
