I think they should expand their financial district at least further away from the Old Beijing including the Forbidden City. The scale of the majestic world-class palace must not be overwhelmed by the supertall towers of today unless they want to tell I believe the (great) past is to be shadowed by the might of today.

The picture you mean is a strong telephoto.

In practice, the NBD is quite far away from the Palace, seen with the human eye.
And it's also a quiet long (and interesting!) walk.

In Tokyo, the Palace is much more closely surrounded by tall buildings.

^ Indeed, that's not something to worry about, the CBD is more than 5 kilometer away from the Forbidden City.

One thing for sure, the city planners have protected the city center (and the city meridian that runs north-south across the city) well as it's the historical center and also the political center (Tiananmen, People's Hall, Zhongnanhai, Mao's Mausoleum). From the Forbidden City you can't see any city skyline.

One thing I rued about Beijing is the desctruction of the grand city wall (in the 60s?). If they had not torn that down, it would have been the greatest city wall in the world. So shortsighted.

That's not quite true.
From the stairs of the Qianqing Palace, the NBD can be clearly seen in the east.
Buildings like CCTV are very recognisable.

OK, you win ... below is the shot eastward from the top of the marble terraces. Not sure if that qualifies as "clearly seen" though but we had digressed.

Impressive construction site. This project will change the skyline dramatically.

Closing on 150 meters, when it goes past 200 meters it will start to rise clearly above most of the other buildings around it.

So much construction, so many open pits. I can't wait to see how it'll look when it's all done and integrated into the city.
