I actually found that funny lol. Zorg was sick of the people asking whether or not it has started construction ie U/C. I think we should keep it as it is until we see piles etc. I must say, Beijing, although not as cool as Shanghai or Hong Kong, is starting to build character, I like hahahahaha

Not a lot of ground breaking ceremonies are conducted with such a fascinating building as their back drop. I do hope for more Chinese styled/inspired buildings so since it is Beijing and all.

BEIJING - Work to build the core area of the capital's central business district (CBD), which includes 18 new low-carbon buildings, will start on Thursday, a city official has announced.

"Preparation for the design and demolition, which started in March last year, has finished," Wu Guiying, Chaoyang district's executive deputy governor, said on Sept 13. "Construction on the (30-hectare zone) should be completed in 2015."

Wu, who is also director of the CBD administrative committee, was speaking at a news conference ahead of the 11th annual CBD Business Festival on Sept 15.

When finished, the zone will be home to the headquarters of 27 companies, including China Minsheng Bank and China Investment Corp, while it is also expected to attract investment of 100 billion yuan ($15.6 billion), with annual tax revenue of more than 50 billion yuan.

A total of 18 new buildings will be built, with companies set to sign low-carbon pledges on Thursday to show their determination to saving energy, land, water and other resources.

"Our goal is to save 65 percent of energy in the construction and maintenance of the buildings," Wu said. "Companies working in the zone should also be from low-carbon emission industries, such as finance and insurance, and be regional headquarters of international companies."
One of the green structures will be Beijing's latest skyscraper, a 510-meter office tower owned by CITIC Group that will have 104 floors above ground and four basement levels.

The final design for the core area, chosen from 203 options provided by 60 domestic and overseas agencies, will be unveiled during the festival, Wu said.

Work on the underground section, which will go down five levels and connect all 18 buildings, has already started. The project includes parking lots and emergency escape routes and will cost 4 billion yuan.

"People can drive underground from one building to another after the construction, which will definitely alleviate traffic above ground," Wu said.

An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 people will work in the core area, with 85 percent expected to commute using public transport, he said.

More than 180,000 people already work for about 15,000 companies in the CBD, making traffic congestion a pressing issue. Three new subway lines and three new bus stations will be built in the zone by 2015, Beijing Youth Daily reported. The west-to-east Line 6 will be put into use next year.

New Skyscraper to be Tallest in Beijing
2011-09-15 13:16:34 CRIENGLISH.com Web Editor: Fuyu

Construction works on the tallest building in Beijing will begin next week in the city's CBD area. The building, named "Zhongguo Zun", which means "the Chinese wine vessel" due to its shape, will stand over 500 meters above ground level and is expected to be completed within 5 years, the Beijing News reports.

The Zhongguo Zun will be located near Guanghua Road in the east of Beijing. It will contain 124 floors in total, with 118 floors above ground and 6 floors under ground. It will not only dwarf the China World Trade Center Tower III, which is currently the tallest in Beijing at 330 meters high, but will also become the world's first building with a height of over 500 meters to be built in an area that has been zoned as '8th degree seismic fortification intensity'. This essentially means that buildings in Beijing need to be earthquake-proofed to a high standard.

The interior structure will be supported by steel and concrete, and the outside by a huge steel frame to withstand violent earthquakes. The building also has a sound fire control system and uses express elevators in case of an emergency.

The top floor of the Zhongguo Zun will be made into a sightseeing cafe, which will offer a panoramic view of the whole CBD area and the sprawling city. The platform will be lit at night and will be visible from anywhere in Beijing. The building is well-connected with the surrounding streets and provides entrances for both vehicles and people.

The Zhongguo Zun is designed with environmental protection in mind and will aim to adopt the latest energy-saving technologies to maximize efficiency. It will leverage wind power to generate electricity and set up a rain water collection system on the roof.

The Beijing CBD Administration Commission says that the construction of the Zhongguo Zun marks a new era in the development of Beijing's CBD area, and the building has already attracted 27 enterprises, including the China Minsheng Bank, HSBC and Samsung Life Insurance. They are expected to generate more than 100 billion investments in total and more than 50 billion in tax income each year.

Beijing's tallest skyscraper to be built
Updated: 2011-09-19 22:35

BEIJING - A groundbreaking ceremony for a new skyscraper took place in Beijing's central business district (CBD) on Monday, marking the beginning of construction on what will eventually be the city's tallest skyscraper.
The design of the China Zun building was inspired by an ancient Chinese wine vessel, according to the CITIC Group, the building's developer. The building will serve a variety of functions, serving as both an office building and a tourist destination, according to the group...

This post of maxin is actually very important in this thread.
The pictures show the OFFICIAL LAUNCHING CEREMONY of the building on SEPTEMBER 19, 2011. In the first picture, you can see leaders from the Central and Beijing governments. This is no joke.
In other words, construction has formally begun. So, mod, please move this thread to the u/c part.

Duh. A groundbreaking ceremony does not mean that a building is under construction.

The source is from the news report on Beijing Television. I'm not sure if it is fully believable. Here are some screenshots of the news:

Looking at the picture, 1WTC is actually shorter than Taipei 101. If only tianjin 117's design has been changed the the whole line up would look a lot better
