Spain Through My Lens

I will be posting photos from various places in this country and take a gander at Spain through my lens and see if you don't fall in love as I did!

León is one of the most historic regions of Old Castile. It is a fairly large province, bordered by Galicia and Asturias, as well as by Palencia and Zamora.

The Town Walls are of Roman and Medieval construction and are very impressive. The San Isidro Tower is of particular interest.

The city of León has been very cosmopolitan, even since Roman times when it was known as Legio Septima due to the fact that the seventh legion was stationed here. The Moors moved in briefly but were driven out by the kings of Asturias who chose it as their new capital in AD913.

One of León's glories is without doubt, the Cathedral, one of the finest in Europe and having been constructed from the 13th century for a period of 200 years to completion. Among its unusual features are its towers and steeples where no attempt was made to make them match. It has more than 250 remarkable stained glass windows including a large rose window. In total there is over 1800 square metres of glass.

I have always fancied various styles of windows in Spain. I love the details of the metal grille works of the edifices.

Your welcome! The best way would probably from the León airport if your flying from Germany. But they have trains and buses that goes to the city. I traveled by bus going there and it was nice.

The town of Las Médulas is located in the region of El Bierzo, Leon. This small mountain town marks the natural beginning of the ascent towards Las Médulas, a unique cultural landscape that was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO.The serrated relieve of this landscape, marked by red clayey mountains and covered by chestnut trees, owes its appearance to the Romans, who altered the natural environment in this area when they established a gold mine in the 1st century AD.

Thanks Ribarca! It's going to be all over different parts of Spain. I haven't really organized my photo sets yet!

Madrid is definitely one of the best cities in the world. Here are more of the "modern" part of the city. I think people had seen so much of the Old World charms.

Baiona: This is a coastal town that was the focus for trade in the region until the spectacular development of Vigo that took place at the end of the 19th century. Movement on the Vigo estuary is marked by commercial and fishing vessels, all under the watchful eye of Baiona, located alongside Cape Silleiro. The town’s most attractive streets are set around the bay, which open up next to the mouth of Miño River. It was here that the La Pinta moored in 1493, the first caravel to reach port after the voyage of discovery to the New World. Don’t miss the sunset from Monterreal Fort and its famous Príncipe Tower. It has three kilometres of defensive walls and is now a Parador Hotel. The 18th-century Santa María Collegiate Church is also well worth visiting. This monument maintains Romanesque touches in its Gothic structure, which resembles that of a fortress.

Ponferrada, capital of the region of El Bierzo, is one of the major staging posts on the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela as it passes through the province of León. The historic quarter of this town sits below an imposing castle built by the Knights Templar.
