Actually, it depended mostly on local politicans. Look at Hanover how they decided to build a modern, car-friendly city.
I've read that there were plans in Regensburg to tare down parts of the old town in order to build a more modern centre untill the sixties!

Zittau dropped from ~39.000 in 1989 to ~21.000 now. That's the biggest decline since the Thirty Years War, and there is no end in sight. They could actually tear down all houses built after 1900, since the town shrunk to her preindustrial size.
A nice example of the effects of Saxonys horse and sparrow policy. Dresden is the horse, Upper Lusatias towns are the sparrows.

Other people have said it a million times before me, but I'm going to say it anyway: great pictures!

The only one of these cities that I've visited is Dresden, back in 2006. I'd love to visit the other ones too, especially Görlitz and Leipzig.

Both places are well worth a trip. If you're in the area I guess you might as well visit Wroclaw too. Shouldn't take too long by car.

But remember, the Gold orb and cross on top of the Dresden Frauenkirche is British. That's friendship.

I think the guy who built it is actually the son of a bomber pilot who took part in the raid on Dresden. But all is forgiven now.
