MBTA later this month is adding trains to its Framingham-Worcester Line. This is the second-highest ridership line in the MBTA commuter rail network (after the Providence/Stoughton Line).

source: http://www.telegram.com/article/2014...301089908/1116

This used to be a freight line owned by CSX, but ever since MBTA took over control last year, passenger services have increased and improved. Service improvements have been rolled out over the past several years. Also on 2013.01.27 is the full opening of the updated Yawkey station featuring a second platform. The station used to have just one platform, and this limited the number of trains that could stop there. In addition to being across the street from Fenway Park, this station is close to Boston University, Kenmore Square and various hospitals in the Longwood medical area. Here is a construction photo from last month:

Future plans include adding a fourth station in the city of Boston. This one will be in the Brighton district and will likely be called "Boston Landing."

Also, French private transportation conglomerate Keolis will take over the commuter-rail running operations in July. The contract contains various financial penalties intended to incentivize the provision of good service:

Yawkey station improvements have been put off indefinitely.

Not surprising unless one is surprised when thunder is heard after lightning.

It says that additional westbound commuter service has been delayed due to ongoing improvements at Yawkey, not that the Yawkey station improvements are, themselves, postponed. It also says an email with an MBTA spokesman suggests they'll be starting services at the end of next month.

I doubt that'll happen, but it being a couple extra months away is pretty different from being put off indefinitely.

Aquaticko, do you have any inside track at MBTA? I was looking to get a job there at the public relations department. It's an easy job - you can just make up stuff as you go along -- schedules, opening dates, costs, etc.

I like the editorial in the Worcester Telegram:

Quote:
On Jan. 7, the MBTA announced that new trains would be added in a week, and a new schedule of times would take effect Jan. 27. When it became clear that deadline could not be met, MBTA General Manager Beverly A. Scott announced the expanded service would be in place by the end of February.

This week, we learned that deadline won't be met, either.

This time, the MBTA hasn't set a specific date, other than to say the service expansion will take place before the end of winter. Presumably, that means the third week of March.

The repeated delays are being attributed to the still-incomplete $14.9 million redesign of the Yawkey station. Once remaining issues are resolved there, a new schedule and expanded service can be implemented to Worcester.

We don't doubt the MBTA's reasons for repeatedly missing its deadlines. We only wish they would learn that it is better to under-promise and over-deliver, rather than the other way around.

Check Out This Computer Simulation of the Green Line Extension Project [Video]
Published: February 25th 2014, 2:23pm

The Green Line Extension Project is poised to change residential development and transportation habits for Cambridge, Somerville and Medford residents. Intended to increase the reach of the Green Line further past Lechmere into these cities, the project is still in its early stages with plenty left to do. A new computer simulation hints at how much change entire project is expected to bring.

The below video was taken "at the neighborhood meeting on retaining walls and sound barriers on Monday, February 24, at St. Clement School in Medford," according to the YouTube account Ken Krause. During the meeting GLX team members presented the video showing the passage of a Green Line train through Lechmere and subsequently into the proposed stations throughout Somerville and Medford.

Tuesday night the MBTA will host a GLX public outreach meetingto be held at the Holiday Inn, 30 Washington St., inside the Assembly Square Ball Room, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Here, GLX project team members will outline much of what's put on display in the video above:

the construction of 6 new stations, a new maintenance vehicle facility, additional viaduct and bridge construction, drainage and utility work, signal and communication upgrades.

Once completed, Green Line service will extend from a relocated Lechmere Station to Union Square in Somerville and on to College Avenue in Medford.

understatement if there was one. We are packed like sardines every single day

and the government center station will be closed for 2 years. You can build a brand new line in that time frame
