CAF wins Boston Green Line order
16 May 2014

USA: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation board approved a $118m contract on May 14 for CAF USA to supply 24 light rail vehicles for Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Boston Green Line, including the Green Line Extension project. About half of the cost is to be met by a Federal Transit Administration New Start grant. Deliveries will run from the end of 2017 until the end 2018.

The 70% low-floor LRVs are designated Type 9 by MBTA. They will have ‘dynamic computer-controlled lighting, heating and cooling’, and will meet the latest ADA accessibility requirements with four wheelchair/pram spaces. All priority seats will have space underneath to accommodate assistance animals or mobility equipment. CCTV will cover the passenger areas, doors and track.

CAF is to produce the bodyshells in Spain, with final assembly and testing at its plant in Elmira, New York, to comply with Buy America regulations.

MassDOT plans to award a contract later this year for 74 metro cars for the Red Line and 152 for the Orange Line

#57 bus almost fell onto the I-90 freeway (Boston-Seattle). The driver "originally claimed that she suffered from a severe case of seasonal allergies that had caused her to sneeze continuously and lose sight of the road, police said in an affidavit last week," according to the Boston Globe. "But police said that footage from an internal surveillance camera on the bus showed that [the driver] was holding what appeared to be a cellphone in her left hand in the moments leading up to the crash."

She has been suspended without pay! This is highly unusual - unionized employees are usually suspended without pay only when at least one passenger dies (there were only injuries here).

A similar event happened in Auckland with a bus hanging over the motorway. This was due to a bus mechanical fault, though, not due to driver error. Glad no one was hurt in either case.

Keolis takes over Boston commuter services
01 Jul 2014

Keolis Commuter Services took over operation of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's 14 Boston commuter rail services on July 1

USA: Keolis Commuter Services took over from Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co as operator of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's 14 Boston commuter rail services with effect from July 1, saying it would improve punctuality, safety, cleanliness and customer service on the fifth largest commuter network in the USA, and the largest to be put out to tender.

In January the state’s Department of Transportation selected the Keolis subsidiary for the eight-year contract to operate the services, which carry 127 000 passengers a day. The winning bid was worth $2·69bn, with options for two two-year extensions which would take the value to $4·26bn.

‘This is a momentous day for Keolis, our passengers and the communities we will serve,’ said Eric Asselin, Executive Vice-President & General Manager for Keolis North America on July 1. ‘From customer service to on-time performance, we pride ourselves in how we are always “thinking like a passenger” in everything we do. With the commitment of our employees and the input of our passengers, we are dedicated to making one of the nation’s pre-eminent commuter rail services even better.’

A staffed customer service centre will be open seven days a week, and Keolis is to introduce new signage and pocket timetables with ‘larger, easier-to-read system maps’. A journey planning app has been launched immediately, with an upgraded version to follow later in the year planned to offer real-time information and the ability to register lost or found property

I'd have to double check, but it is probably the silver line extension past the airport and into Chelsea.

This month? That's likely a hoax.

They said the same thing about MBTA Framingham/Worcester Line (new) Yawkey station, and then they kept pushing it off for months. The only agency that has less credibility when announcing this type of stuff is the NYC MTA (the 7-train extension to 34th Street and the Fulton Street Transit Ctr will be "just a few months away" for the rest of eternity).

STATE SEEKS AIR RIGHTS DEVELOPER NEAR HYNES STATION
9/3/2014

STATE HOUSE, BOSTON - The state went back out to bid Wednesday on a development opportunity above the Massachusetts Turnpike in Boston's Back Bay, which would involving renovating a Green Line station.

Transportation Secretary Richard Davey told the News Service the redevelopment, known as Parcel 13, would make the Hynes Convention Center station accessible to people with disabilities and refurbish an old pedestrian tunnel that runs under Massachusetts Avenue.

Davey said the development at the corner of Mass. Avenue and Boylston Street would also reconnect the underground trolley station to Boylston Street. A disused old head house sits alongside the turnpike.

"We put this out to bid a few years ago," said Davey, who said there were no acceptable bids. The new request for proposals was dated Sept. 2 and appeared on the state's website on Wednesday.

The development opportunity would make use of air rights above the Massachusetts Turnpike before it dives under Boylston Street
