6.9 km of extension north towards Somerville and Medford, map taken from Wikipedia. As for current Lechmere station (which is loop), it would replaced by new through station:

MassDOT Announces New Criteria for Prioritizing Capital Projects
7/2/2015

BOSTON - Today, MassDOT Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack announced the publication of new recommendations for the evaluation and prioritization of proposed capital projects. The recommendations have been submitted to MassDOT by an independent Project Selection Advisory Council, which has worked for 18 months to develop a new process for selecting transportation investments.

"This new prioritization system will help us to make important decisions about our capital resources in a way that is smarter and more transparent," said Secretary Pollack. "I want to thank the members of the Project Selection Advisory Council for their hard work in the development of these new criteria, and their continued efforts as we enter the implementation phase."

In 2013, the Legislature established the Project Selection Advisory Council and charged it with developing a uniform, data-driven, and transparent approach to scoring and ranking capital transportation projects for funding. The new process, which MassDOT will begin to implement immediately, seeks to ensure that transportation dollars are spent in a multi-modal and strategic manner and are distributed in a regionally balanced way across the Commonwealth

You could always rebuild it.

My overall feel about the network was good, a good coverage of the city centre (Downtown and Back Bay).

I didn't expect the network to look so old. I knew that Boston subway was old but I throught that it would be more modern looking.
Even the modern part or renovated part looked a bit dated aesthetically.

Orange line: Downtown Crossing.

Orange line: Community College

Congratulations on arriving in North America! Based on the pictures I agree that the system looks very ancient.

I did see some commuter trains at North station and Back Bay but but I didn't took pictures.
The commuter train network is operated by Keolis, a french transit company mainly owned by the SNCF.

Red line: Downtown Crossing

Red line: Havard
The station is on two levels.

Did you ride on the Green Line? It's as close to a European tram as you'll get in the US, especially the B, C, and E branches.
