HIDCO building looks better than Synthesis Park.

its better to own an office building than to work from rented space, that too in a stadium!!

That's not the new HIDCO office. HIDCO will have its corporate office in the Synthesis Business Park itself. Behind the arch, there are two independent towers in the Synthesis Business Park (11 floors each). One of those independent towers will house the HIDCO corporate office.

In yet another salvo to railway minister Mamata Banerjee who had been on a moral high for all these days opposing "forcible" land acquisition by the state government from Singur to Rajarhat, state housing minister Gautam Deb pointed to the draconian Railway (Amendment) Act 2008 that is being invoked by the railways to acquire land all over the country. The Act empowers the nominee of the railway board to take possession of the land even before hearing out the affected landowners.

"The process that we have been following under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, has to pass through several phases from the notification date. The collector has to hear the affected families, take note of their objections, if any, before acquisition. But there is no such provision in the RAA. The railways can take possession within 24 hours of serving the notice even without the knowledge of the landowner. All other will follow. We would request Mamata Banerjee to follow the Rajarhat model and repeal the act," the state housing minister said.

Prior to this, Deb presented his case, highlighting the observations of Trinamool Congress leaders Saugata Roy, Atish Sinha and Sital Sardar, who have been chairpersons of the Assembly Standing Committee on Housing. This was followed by the observations of former bureaucrat-turned-politician Debabrata Bandyopadhyay. A song by rebel Trinamool Congress MP Kabir Suman ran as the background music of the entire audio-visual presentation making it all the more significant. Later, the minister handed over a 67-page status report over Rajarhat land. "I will send a copy to Mamata Banerjee's Kalighat residence, seeking her advice or objection," he said.

The observations of the Trinamool leaders came handy to the minister to demolish the charge of forcible land acquisition by Hidco. He pointed out that the state housing board gave advertisements for direct purchase of land in 1996, to which a total of 2,142 landowners applied for handing over 988 acres.

Accusing Mamata for creating much ado about nothing over land acquisition in Rajarhat, Deb said the state government was always ready to help the railways to acquire land. "Even after the Trinamool did not let Singur happen, the chief minister, though with a broken heart, offered none other than the railway minister to set up railway factories at Singur. We have been continuously insisting on a bilateral discussion that Mamata Banerjee is not paying heed to. Why can't a meeting be held between the CM and the railway minister at Writer's Buildings? There has to be at least some dialogue between the two parties," Deb said.

He also blamed that the Trinamool was creating trouble in implementing many projects in the state. "They won't let the Jessore Road to be widened. They won't let us build a new bypass through Rajarhat. They won't let the Haldia bridge to happen. What kind of politics is this? How will it sound if I say that I won't let any of their projects to happen?" he said.
