Street Furniture

I have been thinking of smart street furniture in New Town to give it a clean and futuristic look. Street Furniture means and includes things that you see as you travel on the road - these include footpath railings, bus stops, public toilets, information boards, benches, traffic signal systems, variable message boards, garbage bins and food / magazine kiosks. Consultants UMTC met me last Friday and gave a small presentation that would be part of the overall strategy of public transportation in New Town. Here is a photo from Delhi that was part of this presentation:

I have, of course, seen these kiosks in Delhi. I also liked the other street furniture installed recently in Delhi in the wake of the Commonwealth games. Above all, I liked the idea that the system is self-sustaining in the sense that a fleet of trained personnel with dedicated vehicles and machines clean all the street furniture at regular intervals. We will discuss further to see how we can adopt the methodology for New Town.

Cancelling Parkomat EOI: There has been only two bids for the Expression of Interest for setting up a Parking Plaza in New Town. We are cancelling the tender.

Since it is pratidin not sure how much substance is there. But looks like Infosys has sent a letter expressing their willingness to get hold of the land in newtown. This is seen as part of a possible deal between Infy and SP. Partha Chatterjee is visiting Bangalore tomo. to meet Infy officials.

Info says is merely taking hold of the land. It hasn't said that it will start with it's campus construction. For Infy, it's a win win situation, they have got prime land in the city at a throwaway price. They might set up a call centre type of facility. They can use the rest for real estate.

I read this in TOI. Anyway Infy has paid the full purchase amount for the land. So obviously they will ask for occupation permisssion. Rest is all market speculation.

Partha Chatterjee- Infosys meet raises hope

State IT minister Partha Chatterjee's meeting with Infosys top brass in Bangalore on Thursday seems to have put an end to the ongoing stalemate. The state government and the IT bellwether will work together in order to find a solution to the IT giant's project in the state.

"The meeting went off well. They said they are ready to work together with the state government to find out a viable solution for the project. They have understood our obligations towards the people of West Bengal regarding SEZ and we have also understood that they need some tax benefits to start their project in the state. Both of us (state and Infy) will work towards it," Chatterjee told TOI after the 45-minute long meeting. Chatterjee was accompanied by another government official.

Chatterjee said he took the effort to visit Infosys headquarters so that people in Bengal do not feel that the government did not give enough importance to the project. The government is also mulling routes through which it can provide tax sops to Infosys.

An Infosys spokesperson said: "We had a meeting with the IT minister of West Bengal, Partha Chatterjee today. We discussed the issues on the proposed Infosys Development Center in Kolkata. We have agreed to work together towards finding a solution."

The Infosys project in the state hit a hurdle when the Mamata Banerjee government denied special economic zone (SEZ) status to the project, stating that it was "in-principle" against the SEZ policy.

A source said Infosys in the meeting clarified that it is answerable to its shareholders and will work towards a "win-win" situation both for the state government as well for itself.

"Infosys said they have lots of employees from Bengal who are keen that the company will start something in the state. The company said it has put its best brains together to chalk out a solution for this ongoing impasse," the source added.

There were talks of it being unviable for Infosys to do export-oriented work from Rajarhat since the company won't be granted the SEZ status. Instead, it was more feasible for the IT giant to cater to the domestic market needs.

But the real business is export-oriented one, domestic business is not that big.

Street furniture to give Rajarhat a futuristic look
Suman Chakraborti, TNN | Sep 13, 2012, 07.57AM IST

Quote:

KOLKATA: Taking a cue from the smart street furniture installed in New Delhi during the Commonwealth Games, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) plans to give Rajarhat New Town a fresh and clean look.

The Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC), which is working as a consultant for Hidco to develop the township's transport system, recently gave a presentation on street furniture as well.

Officials said they are looking at smartly designed railings, bus-stops, public toilets, information boards, benches, traffic signal systems, variable message boards, garbage bins and food or magazine kiosks. "We will discuss how the methodology can be adopted for Rajarhat New Town," a Hidco official said.

Such smart street furniture were set up in New Delhi in the wake of the Commonwealth Games. and the Hidco authorities are taking a cue from the installations.

Officials said that the system in New Delhi is self-sustaining. There is a group of trained workers equipped with vehicles and machines to maintain all the street furniture at regular intervals.

Hidco is working on beautifying Rajarhat New Town to develop it as a futuristic city. A workshop will be conducted next week where 12 well known artists will carve out sculptures to be installed at New Town traffic intersections. An eco-park is being developed on a 430-acre waterbody.

Hidco authorities have also asked developers, who have set up housing projects in the township, to come up with beautification plans. "There is a need to install road direction markers in the township as motorists face problems to identify and reach a particular place," a local resident said.

The state government is already working on a beautification plan of the city and upcoming towns to impart a bright, aesthetic, clean and green look. The overall plan include roadsides, pavements, road dividers, boulevards, traffic islands and crossings with complete street decoration, including well illuminated street lights. The idea is to come up with theme-based, stylized beautification of these towns.

When principlal secretaries have to post articles from newspapers like Pratidin and Sakalbela then it must mean nothing much is happening. Kind of like Ganashakti saying West Bengal was like heaven under CPM rule.
