Just some input here to help you guys:

A) this is obviously not true.

B) any food will do this. even chewing on sweet chewing gum will do this. even just imagining about food will do this.

C) the body and brain can survive without ingesting sugar (just in case any of you are crazy diabetic and can't eat tons of sugary goodness). the brain can run on something other than glucose. the most important nutrient is protein.

C) Dates are very rich with sugary energy and so the body is supplied with the most important nutrients which is sugar that is irreplaceable as a nutrient for the brain cells and nerves.

Dates protect the fasting person from having constipation as a result of changing meals times or as a result of having low fiber amounts in meals.

The alkaline salts in dates adjust the acidity of blood which result from excessiveness eating of meat and carbohydrates which causes a lot of hereditary diseases as diabetes, gout, renal stones, gall bladder inflammations, high blood pressure and hemorrhoids).

The research of date's benefits, prepared by nutrition department of hospitals administration in the health ministry in Kuwait.
Good stuff, you're right about dates...very healthy - all alkaline foods are good for you.

How can Islamic countries complete in the western world when they shut down for a month during Ramadan every year ?? Shouldn't the religious rules be changed so that the Ramadan period is made shorter, say a week max ??

Generally not elsewhere but in countries like Dubai there is a "slow down" can't say everywhere but in construction it comes to even a "grinding halt".... even hours are reduced and that's a pretty well known unless people live in caves ...Ramadam Kareem - In Shallah...

I Know,

I am not interested in debating religion and am not trying to bait you into a flamewar, I am just curious to know your answers to:

1 - The local emirates coop hires three times as many butchers during ramadan, so are you sure that the daily caloric intake is the same or less?

2 - You say(in the quote above) that fasting is voluntary, I thought it is a pillar in your religion and therefore required?

3- Dehydration is contra-indicated while operating heavy
equipment, which was not relevant in the 7th century, but today, is it morally right to put other's lives at risk by driving a car, while fasting?

Answer to question 1 - The calorie intake during ramadan "should" be lower than the calorie intake during non fasting days. Only makes sense. However , some people think ramadan is only about fasting and staying away from food , which is absaloutely incorrect. when you observed the eating habbits of a society where obesity is the second cause of death then its only natural you were sent into a spiral of utter confusion and dismay

2- Yes fasting is a pilar of islam and every muslim should follow them. Ofcourse there are exceptions , illness , travelling long distances , pregnancy....etc ....and like i said earlier , fasting isnt about not eating or drinking for 15 hours a day , there are many things involved and it really does come down to being between the human and god. only god knows if one is truely fasting.

3- Your third question , could you make it clearer please ?

Thank you for your answers,

To clarify number 3....

Driving while fasting is very dangerous ...for example http://www.arabianbusiness.com/531664 ... why do people do it, as it is reckless endangerment. If you fast, then either commute, take public transit, or fast only on days you dont drive.
