It seems fasting is prevalent in christianity too:

Spiritual Preparation. Fasting is a self-sacrifice that makes one humble and more accepting of God's will. Moses fasted for forty days in preparation for receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28 ) Daniel fasted for three weeks before receiving his vision (Daniel 10:2-6) Elijah fasted forty days before speaking with God (1 Kings 19:8 ) Jesus fasted for forty days in preparation for His temptation by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13).

Also for Buddhists:

The young prince Siddhartha left his palace in search of enlightenment and practiced for the next six years, Siddhartha wandered through the countryside studying with six teachers and practicing severe austerities. Towards the end of this period, surviving only on a single grain of rice a day, Siddhartha was reduced to skin and bones. This stage of Buddha is known as Fasting Buddha. Then, while he was fasting in the mountains he realized that severe fasting would lead him to death rather than enlightenment. Thus he decided to adopt the middle path between the extremes of luxury which he had known in his youth and the extremes of austerities which he was currently following.

And here is what it says in the Quran regarding this for your information.

"Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain piety". Qur'an 2:183

"The month of Ramadan, in which the Qur'an was sent down as guidance for people, and as clear signs of Guidance and the Criterion (between truth and falsehood). Therefore whoever of you is present this month, must fast it, and whoever is so ill that he cannot fast or on a journey (must fast the same) number of other days. God wills ease for you, and He does not will hardship for you, so that you can complete the number of the days required, and exalt God for He has guided you, and so it may be that you will give thanks (due to Him)". Qur'an 2:185

So as I understand, fasting enlightens you and brings you closer to God?

Dubai's biggest iftar

Quote:
It is a sight to behold for anyone joining the iftar meal for the first time
By Jay B. Hilotin
Chief Reporter
Published: 21:30 July 25, 2012

It’s 7.05pm on Tuesday in the middle of a sweltering Dubai evening. The narrow roads around Ali Rashid Lootah Mosque in the old part of the city are quiet –- except for the muezzin’s call to prayers.

It’s near the end of a 15-hour Ramadan fast. The footpaths around the mosque are packed with up to 5,000 people -- quiet, almost contemplative.

It’s a sight to behold for anyone setting foot for the first time on this area at this time.

Volunteers gladly usher anyone to find a place to sit and share a meal with perfect strangers

“Everyone is welcome here. It is not as much about the food, as it is about the spirit of community. We don’t ask where a person comes from, or his skin colour or his job. These differences don’t matter,” said businessman A. Liyakath Ali, 57, general secretary of the Indian Muslim Association (Iman).

Ramadan release for 100s of prisoners in Dubai

The move comes ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan and reflects the ruler's desire "to allow the released prisoners an opportunity to engage in social life, to correct their path and start a new page in life as righteous members of the society, doing good to their families and the community at large," Dubai's Attorney General Essam Al Humaidan told the state news agency Wam.

Dubai residents unhappy with Ramadan parking timings

Several complain paying until midnight is hitting them hard; some say new timings are not displayed prominently

By Bindu Suresh RaiPublished Saturday, July 28, 2012

Several residents of Bur Dubai, Satwa and Karama areas are complaining about the new Ramadan timings for paid parking zones, calling it ‘inconvenient’ and ‘difficult’.

According to the new timings that were launched by the Roads and Transports Authority last week, paid parking hours throughout Dubai, except Dubai Media City (DMC) and Dubai Internet City (DIC), will be from 8am to 1pm and 7pm to midnight.

'I am at peace with myself'

Quote:
Ramona Ruiz

Jul 21, 2012

DUBAI // Daisy Ida had wanted to convert to Islam from Christianity since 2009, but had no idea how to go about it.

Then, less than two weeks ago, she heard a guest on a radio show, a Filipino Muslim, tell both Muslims and non-Muslims they were free to call him with any questions about Islam and Ramadan. She noted down the number.

On Friday last week, Ms Ida, 28, recited the shahada, the testimony of faith, in front of a group of Filipino Muslims. Her Muslim name is Fatima.

"I feel overwhelmed whenever I hear the athan [call to prayer]," she said. "I'm at peace with myself and grateful to Allah."

So if you are Muslim you can have a an increase in wages or land yourself a better job in Dubai?

That is not a good incentive.....

After looking at the Bible and Quran, I can see why people convert. The readings offer many similarities, Moses and Jesus are predominant in the Christian Bible and they are also mentioned many times in the Quran, even Adam and Eve appear in the Quran although their fate is somewhat different as they were (mercifully) forgiven for their sin and not condemned as it's says in Bible texts....

About him from his website - http://yushaevans.com/bio/

Quote:
In his own words:

(Taken from a newspaper interview)

In what faith were you raised?
I was raised in Greenville, S.C. with a very strict Methodist upbringing.

How involved were you in Christianity?
I was actually going to a small Bible college in Greenville through our church and actually had an intention to enroll in Bob Jones University. My intention was to become a minister or a missionary. I also had interest in becoming a Bible scholar, and I was learning to read the Bible in Hebrew and Greek.

When did you convert to Islam, and why?
It was in December of 1998. After reading the Bible maybe six or seven times, cover to cover, analytically, I began to realize there were a lot of inconsistencies, contradictions. This confusion led me to leave Christianity altogether and I started searching other religions, Buddhism, Taoism – every kind of “ism” that’s out there – and none of them seemed to have a clear truth. One day I ran into a Muslim. He invited me to a Friday worship service and when I saw Muslims praying it was almost like a light went off in my head. I asked for a copy of the Quran. I read it cover to cover in one week, and that was enough.

How difficult was the decision to become a Muslim?
The decision was not very difficult. The difficulty came after the decision.

Did your family have difficulty accepting your conversion?
My old-fashioned grandmother – I was raised by my grandmother – it was hard for her to digest. And my mother, who is a Baptist, and my father, he’s a Christian and a freemason, it was not easy for him. But it was harder for my extended family, many of whom are involved in politics in South Carolina. It was people trying to talk me out of it and not so much an open condemnation, but you could feel the cold shoulder of the family.

How exactly does one convert to Islam?
If you believe in your heart that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, then you must make something called shahada – open testimony, an open declaration. You do that before anybody who can be witness to this. I did it at a Muslim brother’s home late in the night. There’s nothing like a ritual that you have to go through.

How much has Islam changed your life?
After I left Christianity I started heading down the wrong road, being 17 years old and being confused by the world. Islam put me back on a right perspective and even my family sees it has made me a much better and a much better-rounded person than I ever could have been.

11th Ramadan Forum Update - Islamic scholar urges everyone to seek the truth

Quote:
25 Filipinas professed their faith in Islam after lecture at the Ramadan forum

Staff Report

Published: 17:24 August 4, 2012

Dubai: Some 25 Filipinas converted to Islam after attending the 11th Ramadan Forum where an eminent Islamic scholar from the Philippines delivered a lecture inviting Muslims and non-Muslims to the “path to salvation.”

Islamic scholar Omar Penalber discussed the various criteria for salvation that the world has today in a lecture titled ‘A Breeze of Mercy,’ organised by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

Penalber said: “Reflect on yourself whether your religion is one of the criteria. If not please seek the truth.”

This truth, he said, can be found in the verses of the Quran which state that Islam is the religion of all the prophets and the only religion that is acceptable in the sight of Almighty “Allah”.

Penalber emphasised the oneness of Allah and discussed the Articles of Faith and the five pillars of Islam. He entertained various questions from the audience, and 25 Filipinas decided to profess their faith in Islam.

He also called on everyone not to judge Islam by how some Muslims are being portrayed in the media.

“Judge Islam by what it teaches and surely you will attain the true meaning of life, success, happiness and peaceful living in this world and the hereafter. As long as we are strong, don’t hesitate to seek the truth, because the truth will set you free,” Penalber said.

The Philippines was a predominantly Muslim country before the Spaniards colonised it in 1521.

Shafaat Shahbandari, Staff Reporter
Published: 15:24 August 7, 2012

Dubai: A dedicated centre for the growing number of new Muslims in Dubai will open soon, offering various services to the new faithful.

Launched under the orders of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the institution is named Mohammad Bin Rashid Centre for Islamic Culture.

“The idea for the centre was conceived following Shaikh Mohammad’s meeting with a group of New Muslims recently, who stressed the need for such an institution and Shaikh Mohammad immediately gave orders,” said Dr Omar Al Khateeb, Deputy Director General of Islamic Affaiss at Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD).

Impressed by the culture and spirit of Islam a growing number of people have come to the fold of Islam over the last six years, said Al Khateeb, who is overseeing the project.
