Gloomy Riga - Autumn of 2009.

I visited Riga roughly a year ago for the first time. With 710 000 inhabitants it´s the third largest city in the Baltic region (behind St Petersburg and Stockholm). Riga still has what some might call east European charm, and feels much less "sophisticated" that any Nordic capital city.

The old town is beautiful, but quite boring and with some reconstructed buildings bordering disneyesque. The grand neoclassic city around it is far more interesting though also very run- down in places. The touristy and well kept Old Town was a huge contrast to the "real" city, which makes Riga feel a bit unbalanced. I also have to admit that Riga is the most depressive city I´ve ever visited. Not just the dilapidated buildings - but the people. Everyone seems a bit sad. I also recently learned that Riga is the most dangerous capital in Europe (bar Moscow).

Still, I had a good time in Riga!

^The weather doesn´t exactly help, but it matched the feeling I got in the city. Riga has enormous potential though, and I urge people to visit the city before it gets all gentrified.

You hit the most depressive period when economical crisis was at its peak. Now people are a lot more smiley Autumn also doesn't help.

Despite the weather, I find this city charming.
maybe it would look different in summer when people are out in the streets.

A strangely inviting ghost-town feel to those pictures. How cities can change with the seasons eh.

Thanks very much . Some pix seemsa perfect scenery for a spies film of the cold war. I love it.

Others look much more modern and with colour. Lovely. I´m sure it´s improving also during these years.

Thanks very much. ANother city that I like.

It's not a wise move to visit Riga in autumn, snow-less winter or early spring. It's no wonder it feels depressive then. Also, the technical quality of the pictures... khemm But you have some eye to photography, I think, you should buy a better equipment and then even such weather can be turned into enjoyable photos.

Looks sad indeed. Really depressive. Almost hopeless.

Greetings from Riga,

I think the camera, the weather, the season and the crisis makes Riga look a lot more depressing then it acutally is. But the photos look good in an artistic way.
