Are there any plans to introduce a Adelaide to Melbourne Electric Intercity Service?

Probably Sydney - Canberra (and on to Melbourne) has a higher priority, despite SA and VIC having the same gauge. However as far as I know, no concrete plans exist for that link.

Shame , it could be a test case for higher speed Intercity service.

No plans for Melbourne to Adelaide high speed rail. It's not feasible, as the corridor is so lightly travelled.
ballarat, 100km from Melbourne is the largest town in the corridor and already well served by rail to Melbourne, with hourly services. Beyond that there are only a handful of towns, with populations no larger than 10,000.

The existing train service, the Overland, is barely used.

It's cheaper and quicker to fly between Melb & Adelaide, and in both cases, only about 20mins from the airport to the Cbd, so, you can do city to city in less than 2 hours.

It's a lot of work for not much reward, as it's a very lightly trafficked route.

Much more pressing is the double-tracking and straightening of the southern end of the route.

North of Nambour there are around 3-4 electric trains a day. North of Gympie it falls to 2, north of Bundaberg it falls to 1. (This ignores the very heavily trafficked electric routes in Central Qld which carry coal, sometimes with trains running more frequently than passenger trains in the Brisbane suburban area - but that stuff goes straight to port and doesn't get shipped south.)

There's no chance in hell.

The section that needs the most attention is on the Sunshine Coast, where there is commuter traffic.

I wasn't aware Australia had railway systems... I pictured it to be very car centric, how wrong I was!

Yeah, me too. But its rail system is a lot more developed than either those of the US, Canada or New Zealand. It helps that the population is concentrated in a few large metropolitan areas.
