[UZ] Uzbekistan highways

ADB approves Uzbek loan to revive Silk Road

MANILA, Dec 21, 2007 (AFP) - The Asian Development Bank said Friday it will lend 75.3 million dollars to Uzbekistan to build part of a modern "Silk Road" across central Asia.

Two sections of the A-380, a 1,204 kilometre (746.5-mile) road that runs from the Kazakhstan border in Uzbekistan's north toward Afghanistan and Turkmenistan in the south, will be upgraded, the Philippines-based lender said in a statement.

Loan terms were not disclosed.

"This highway is essential for enhancing regional integration and economic growth in Central Asia," said ADB transport expert Olly Norojono.

The loan was approved a month after Uzbekistan and seven neighbours agreed to an 18 billion-dollar strategy to improve roads, airports, railways, and ports to make the region a vital transit route for trade between Europe and Asia -- a modern-day equivalent of the ancient Silk Road.

Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and Tajikistan are the other parties.

I don't think it's that huge. You can't construct much for 75 million dollars. (500m of the A4 motorway in the Netherlands for instance).

Maybe the Uzbek workforce is cheap or paid in scrips.

Btw it didn´t say anything about the Uzbek contributions to this project, I suppose they´ll pay most of the costs.

In Boston, $1.4 billion buys you one mile of road these days.

Don't think this particular stretch will go through Kashmir, but follow a more northerly routing through the former Soviet states in central Asia.

According http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevepa...ams/120460811/ this:

is the road with the best road surface in Uzbekistan (excluding towns http://www.flickr.com/photos/farhadz/2050651074/].) So $ 75.3 mil may help a lot there.

I don't understand the reason for having concrete crashbarriers when the new modern metalic crash barriers are probably much cheaper and safer. If you crash head-on to a block of concrete at 130km/h, its unlikely to survive.

PS: It is costing Kosovo €7.5m per KM of motorway so even in Kosovo 75m will not really get you anywhere, only about 8km of motorway.

[UZ] Roads in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan - Ўзбекистон

Uzbekistan is one of the more populous republics in Central Asia with almost 28 million inhabitants. The capital Tashkent accounts for 2.1 - 4.5 million people (estimates vary).

Toshkent Ring Road

Toshkent = Uzbek
Tashkent = Russian

Toshkent has a full ring road, approximately 70 kilometers long. It is multi-laned in all sections, often between 4 and 8 lanes, but it lacks grade-separation. Only major intersections are grade-separated. Some sections look more like a parking lot than a major highway.

M39 Toshkent - Samarqand

The M39 runs from the Kazakh border via Toshkent and Samarqand towards the Termez in the deep south at the Afghanistan border.

The M39 is a "Soviet motorway", which means it is a 4-lane divided highway, but only major roads are built as interchanges. The 4-lane section is approximately 300 kilometers long. It also runs through Kazakhstan for a short section between Toshkent and Jizzakh. The alignment is generally pretty straight, with few turns.
