TAJ-UL-MOSQUE, Bhopal, M.P., India. The Largest Mosque in Central India.
Built in 18th century by Shah Jahen Begum, This is a beautiful mosque and believed to be the largest mosque in India. Taj-ul-Mosque came into hot waters of.... UNION CARBIDE....tragedy, the most tragic industrial disaster ever, that killed more than 5000 Bhopalis when toxic chemical gas leaked out of the Plant on one faithful night of december, 1984. This mosque was literally convered into a makeshift morgue. Mosque also held one of the largest funeral prayer ever with thousands of bodies in front. When this great mosque was being built with Glowing Sandstone, little did they know that it will come in handy & play a vital role in the biggest industrial tragedy of mankind. ![]() Grand Entrance ![]() Mosque still dominates the Bhopal skyline. ![]() ![]() PEARL MOSQUE, Bhopal, M.P., India. 2nd Largest in Central India. Built by Sikander Begum, this is a beautiful Marble mosque & rightly called MOTI MASJID.

MECCA MOSQUE, Old Hyderabad, A.P., India. The Largest Mosque in South India.
-------------------------------- ------------------------This Legendary mosque built by the Nizams is named after the the Holy city of Mecca. The reason?. When it was built, few stones from the great mosque in Mecca itself were imported and are enbedded in its walls. The grand mosque gives a great view of "Charminar" which is stone throw away. To the left of Mecca Mosque in its grand courtyard lies the moseleums of all 7 Nizam-ul-Mulk, The rulers of Hyderabad Vintage Mecca Mosque Images Tombs of the 7 Nizam-ul-Mulk Mecca Masjid has an incredible Turkish architecture ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Grand Entrance Grand Courtyard ![]() Qutub Shahi Mosque, Old Hyderabad, A.P., India ![]() ![]()

HAJI ALI MOSQUE & MOUSELEUM, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The Premier mosque of India's Financial Capital
------------- --------------------This renowned Island Mosque/Mouseleum was built in 19th century after a noble saint HAJI ALI, a wealthy businessman. It is believed that he renounced all his wealth & all othe material worldly position on his way to pilgrimage to the Holy city of Mecca. Apparently he never made it back alive. This whitewashed marbled mosque / moseleum is built in his honor & is a breathtaking site on sunny days as it shines in crystal clear Arabian sea waters. --------------------------------- -------------------------- Haji Ali can only be approached by a narrow 500 meter causeway only at "low tides" ![]() -----------------------Grand Entrance------------------------ ![]() ------------------------Mouseleum-------------------------- ![]()

BIG IMAMBARA MOSQUE, Lucknow, U.P., India. One of the Largest
****************** ********************** Lukhnow is the single most distinct place in South Asia. Even in India, it has no parallel. A friend of mine once explained this "land of Nawabs" to me. Basically, it filters down to four "T" and there in lies the very essence of Lukhnow..............Tahzeeb = Manners, Tarbiyyat = Upbringing, Tameez = Respect and Taleem = Education................If one is missing, he/she is not a true Lukhnowi. In terms of architecture, Lukhnow again has no parallel. Lets take a look at this great historic city that is widely claimed to be a birthplace of "URDU" language Besides being a historic epicentre of Urdu literature & poetry, Lukhnow also has an honor of being in the midst of the Revolt of 1857, One of the first freedom struggles for Indian Independence. hey, great pictures of Lucknow Hindustani. i miss it.
If any of you forumers have a copy of the latest India Today at hand, there is a story on the changing Lucknow, and how the elders are lamenting the erosion of the tehzeeb and tarbiyat. |

SHAHJAHANI Mosque (Taj Mahal Mosque), Agra, U.P., India
[b]Built by Mughal Emperor, Shahjahan, This is a great piece of architecture. But unlike the previous Mughal Mosques architecture, this mosque departs from the idea of "greatness does not necessarily lies in grandness". A rather small on Mughal scale of mosques, This is nonetheless an impressive architectural accomplishment & gives you a single best view from inside looking out & can be easily envied by other great mosques of the world. . I hope you know what I am talking about.![]() This mosque is physically split into two identical twins thanks to the "Monument of Love". As atypical as it may seems, It really takes getting use to it. & thus makes it one of my favorites. I just have not seen anything like it ![]() The Mosque literally rises to the skies from the Shadows of the Legendary Taj. **********************Grand Entrance********************** Ceiling Craftsmanship ![]() *************** This is whats knows as "A View To Die For" (& I mean it literally)********** ![]() ![]()

I've been to the Shahjahani Masjid when I went to the Taj. The level of detail and the craftsmenship in it is breathtaking.
I gotta tell you, mere pictures don't do it justice. You have to really be there in person to fully appreciate scale of the geometry |

Everyone..................stick around. My countdown to ****THE FIRST MOSQUE EVER BUILT IN SOUTH ASIA ****is nearing. But everyone in here is for big surprise. Yes, its NOT in North India (definitely not the asoka pillar mosque in Old delhi, built in 12th century). I have already found what is probably a 2nd oldest "surviving" mosque. I'm holding back the image till I confirm it. its nearly 1000+ yrs old like 10th century. The oldest mosque is South Asia is NOT in North India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka. Its in Kerala for sure but I'm not sure if its the oldest "built". It could be oldest "surviving" dating back to 8th century just 150-200 yrs of founding of Islam thanks to arab traders settling on western coast of Kerala for trade.

Dar-ul-Uloom Deobandh, Saharanpur, U.P., India: Asia's premiere Islamic Institute.
*****************
***************** Door of Knowledge After the Great Uprising of 1857, there was perceptible change in the thinking of the Muslims in India. The revolt against the British imperialists was conducted under the banner of Bahadur Shah Zafar, who was then an ailing Emperor of the fast disintegrating Mughal Empire thanks to British tactics & previous emperor Aurangzeb's antics. It was realised that feelings of national integration were of utmost importance for the liberation of the country. Moreover, intellectuals of those days thought that the battle against imperialism had to be fought by creating a sense of patriotism among the people. To this purpose, a small institution of Arabic learning was founded, keeping in view the traditions of the country i.e. free education, simple living and high thinking, as well as a disciplined life. So a shining star of knowledge and wisdom emerged on the country’s intellectual horizon on May 30, 1866, in Deoband under a Pomengranate tree. The first disciple of this institution became a shining star of the freedom-struggle. His name was Mahmood Hasan but he has also come to be known as "Shaikh-ul-Hind" (Scholar of India). Following this, thousands of other institutions came up throughout the country on the same pattern. Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband was moulded in such a way that, on one hand, it revived the basic values of religion and, on the other, created a dynamic force of scholars and freedom fighters, who continued with their struggle till the country was completely free. The scholars of Dar-ul-Uloom have written more than 5000 books in Urdu, Persian, Arabic and English. The number of graduates of this institution is more than 25 thousand. The beneficiaries are not only Indians but of various countries including Russia, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Saudi Arabia & many more. Today, This institution provides 25% of the Islamic research & publishing material towards Islamic library worldwide every year. Its truly an incredible feat for a institution that had a humble begining from a tree & also underlines the very fact that Republic of India is by far the most secular of all nations today [/QUOTE]NADWAT-UL-ULAMA (Congregation of Scholars Mosque), Lucknow, U.P., India ![]() Ashrafia Mosque, Azamgarh, U.P., India. Mitliwala Mosque, Bharuch, Gujarat, India. Dar-ul-Uloom Mosque, Balrampur, U.P., India. (NEPAL Border) Ghaziuddin Mosque, Old Delhi, India Coming up.........Aurangzeb's tomb, mosque & more |
