Wow! all those incredible mosques in India make me jealous!
I especially like the one in Lucknow, birthplace of Urdu, my mother tongue.

Its incredible that a lot of the mosques that have been reduced to ruins are still in use!

yes. Indian mosques are in a real mess. Their architecture requires too much money to renovate and mosques dont have that much money. That is why in Islam you were never suppose to build beautiful and expensive mosques but I guess subcontinent muslim sultanates, nawabs and empires could not differentiate between their palaces/tombs and public mosques. They are the ones to be blamed. I guess they were in the competition with persians, ottomans and arabs. At present, my philosophy is simple. Enjoy them while they last just like all good things. Eventually these massive mosque complexes will be reduced to even more ruins.

Vizinjham Mosque, Kerala, India

Jama Mosque, Mysore, Karnataka, India

Hi,

Very good work and research. I would say, some of world's most beautiful mosques are in india. These are increadible. Look at the diversity of influence on these designs and patterns.

These are works of Art!

Peace.

The most unique mosque in this latest set is the one in Madurai. It reminded me, because of the bright colours used, of south Indian temple towers (gopurams). Thanks for posting these pictures.

Sridhar.............Yes. You are right. The 1st time I saw it. I thought it was temple. But it is a mosque. Those colors do overall architecture does give a temple like feel to that Madurai mosque.

Wow.
I really like Jama Masjid in Agra - nice pattern on gumbad.
Also love the one in Calcutta. It's designed perfectly for an urban setting and has a nice street presence.

Well. Jama Mosque of Agra is legendary in its design of horizontal marble in its domes. quiet a difficult work IMO. This is the first Mughal grand architecture we'll loose forever it seems. Needs to spend some large money just to bring it to its 50% of its past glory. Enjoy it while it last.

Suncity has earlier in his post clearified that that Calcutta mosque was built by Tipu's son, Mohammad after Tipu was martyred & his son thrown out of mysore.

yes it does. But the idea of having long minarets is to make sure call for prayer travels to far off distances and also the most location is visible to newbies such as visitors. BTW it is not 'required' to have tall minarets and domes for the mosques in Islam. Its just a matter of convinence and easy access.
