Kampflamm's (rainy) TOUR OF NORTHERN GERMANY (SCHWERIN / LÜBECK / LÜNEBURG / WISMAR)

Since the weather was really crappy you'll have to make do with fewer shots.

SCHWERIN...capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany's northeasternmost state, smallest big city in the world.

The cathedral:

And another one!

Castle in the background (today a museum and the state assembly):

LÜNEBURG...quaint little city in Lower Saxony, full of half-timbered houses and brick gables. Can't get more northern German than this.

LÜBECK...famous for its brick spires and marzipan. Heavily bombed during WW2.

My Heimat, I'm flipping aus! Mecklenburg! Geil!

But as always, I have to ask how you liked your trip and what was special in those places in your eyes. Since you aren't telling by yourself

By the by, it doesn't look like you had quite a "rainy" tour, so why the title?

Or did you only go out when it's sunny, just like our sun-expert Freki?

My verdict:

Schwerin...its location (the lake and the Pfaffenteich in the center of the city) is perfect. The castle is magnificent and I really liked the Schelfstadt with its brick half-timbered houses. I was somewhat disappointed by some of the Gründerzeit architecture though. Some streets had Ruhrgebiet feel to it, something that I didn't really encounter in (for example) Görlitz, Dresden or Leipzig.

Lüneburg...big surprise of the trip. Awesome historic center, loads of brick gables and narrow streets. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Wismar...another great city. Shame I only managed to visit it while the weather was really crap.

Lübeck...also nice but somewhat disappointing. You definitely notice the war destruction in a number of places and outside of the historic town center the city looks like a highway. The famous Holstentor is wedged in between 2 2-lane parkways.

I did go out during the rain as well but without my camera most of the time. I actually like rainy weather but not when I'm trying to take pics.

Great cities! I have only visited Lübeck of these cities (and passed by Schwerin). They all seem worth a closer look.

vhere ist vismar fotos?

great tour, I haven't seen that castle in schwerin before, is it 19th century? I wonder because it has a very romantic fantasy look to it. Also the next photo with the auktionhaus... the wall on the left is quite disturbing, cant believe they put that up...

Yeah, it was built in the mid-19th century when the Duke of Mecklenburg wanted to get a bigger place to live in. You can definitely see that the architectur was inspired by Chambord Castle, so I feel like it almost looks a bit out of place even though it is at the same time one the most beautiful castles in Germany.
