KOLKATA: The city has become an international hub of stolen cars and bikes. The fact came to light after city detectives busted two well organised rackets, which ran an almost parallel industry' of stolen automobiles.

Because of its geographical position, Kolkata and its fringes have become a major transit point for vehicles stolen in Southeast Asian nations.
Atleast somebody is leveraging the geographical advantage of Kolkata and some business is thriving! :-)

Thumbs down

speaking about cars & bikes.... may I know the god damn reason for the people of KOLKOTTA to refrain from possessing high ended bikes & cars, unlike the rest of the country....?

c'mon, there may be a couple of them here & there, but not as in delhi, mumbai, chennai, bengaluru, hyderabad....even the smaller places like ahmedabad, pune, kochi, chandigarh, ludhiana etc etc are doing much better...we all know this

is it coz people there cannot afford them ...or is it coz the youth there are attracted to same old ambassadors, just like their predecessors?

even the ladies there, however well-to-do backgrounds they may hail from, always trust the faithful cranky buses... very very very few dare to handle even a Scooty or a Pleasure or a Flyte

not that the city possesses huge no. of trendy buses to rely upon... you dont have much problem, if you live live in delhi, bengaluru,.... or even in our own mysooru...

first the state transport dept fails to supply good no. of Merc buses worth 85-90 lakhs each..... now even Marcopolo worth only 55 lakhs seems to be out of reach .... shame WB

and ya, if anything goes wrong at all, people are there to point their dirty fingers towards that TMC bitch.... on what accounts can we hold her responsible for ALL of the aforesaid issues???

Another example of sensational news reporting.

So they actually found one stolen car (and seven more claimed but not found) transitting through Kolkata port and Kolkata becomes the "global hub"?

Most Kolkatans don't like to brag and show off. Since you brought up the question of TMC leader, even the TMC leader wears simple cotton saris. She doesn't need to buy thousands of pairs of shoes unlike leaders in some other parts of the country.

I know that, suncity, but kolkata actually has to pay for the simplicity of its citizens....

all the leading car brands like audi, bmw, merc, porsche, ferrari, jaguar-LR.... are having excellent responses from all over the country, but the east, particularly kolkata , its a boo-boo situation over there

even other guys like volkswagen, skoda, nissan... have dissapointing sales there

moreover, besides kolkata, you dont have any other markets in bengal

bugetta veyron just made its grand entry into India the other day, sadly we may not get to see any of them in our kolkata

I dont wanna talk about that TMC female, she'll turn entire bengal into a garibkhana if she gets to power, 'feel safer back here in namma mysooru

Sir, please do not get offended but let's first try and spell it correctly...it's 'bugatti' not 'bugetta'...one might argue that it's a typo, but evidently it's not...and then again folks who are supposed to track such things should also realise that if it is misspelt like this there is a brand dilution, and the purpose of showing off some knowledge while making a point gets defeated.

I drive a Santro and I consider myself fortunate....if need be will sell that tomorrow and would be happy to use public transport again...and would have no issues if I get booed by someone who drives a Santro past me.

Small point I want to make is, while WB needs to go a long way before it is developed, but certainly the count of high end cars on the street is not a measure of development.

And certainly it really brings tears to eyes seeing people crying (expressed through emoticons) when they find WB lagging some states on that count.

God bless !!

If u still think that Kolkata has no hi-end cars then just visit this link http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/super-...ports-etc.html
and regarding ur queries for high end buses there are three merc buses that run on Kolkata - asansol Route
we have volvo buses run by state govt on four routes and marcopolo in one route
the volvo routes are: Airport- tollygunge (red), Airport - Esplanade (orange), Airport to Satragachi (sea green), Tollygunge - New Town (light blue) and marcopolo (AC) on Taratala - Airport Route (purple)
beemer (bmw) had the highest sales figure in the last fiscal year in Kolkata, again highest in the whole country. Even for merc Kolkata is the biggest market. In the 2009 - 2010 (till Oct) about 30k vehicles (2,3,4,6,10 wheelers) were sold in Kolkata.
So, dude before commenting please check on various sites and then comment!
btw, if kol doesnt have a Bugatti Veyron, it does have a Lambo Gallardo SL!

Ayan buddy - you need to get older (you are just 8 posts young!) and calm down a bit if you are to appreciate what is talked of here and in SSC in general. But I must say I got quite amused by your creativity in the use of emoticans to express your frustrations.

Are you in the car dealership business ? A few High end cars costing crores in the range of a Merc or a Porsche is no indicator of the development of any city in a developing nation like ours that is ranked over 125 in the GDP per capita rankings. Coming to kolkata most people here are well aware of where Kolkata and WB stand and do not see any reason to compare it with more economically forward cities.

Thumbs up

OK, I think I must stop playing games...

it's like this... I've been following ssc for almost a year now, (but never actually thought of joining it until couple of days back)... I believe I have gone thru most of the posts in various threads... especially those related to kolkata. I know that there are many imports in the city & there are many people ACTUALLY interested to do so... I am well familiar with the developments in kolkata & elsewhere in bengal... whether it's IT or real estate or anything else around... I am very impressed & I know that there are much greater potentials for the city of joy...

but what I actually wanted to know, is the mentality, the mindset & the visions of the people....particularly the youngistanis of the city of my dreams... so on account of my entry into ssc, i wanted to...well...test(sorry) the same with an absurd topic.... & finally I am more than satisfied with the various arguments put up by various members ...especially I appreciate the union of so many people for a common cause....frankly speaking, I'm speechless

It is true that mere quantity of high end cars, bikes etc. are never parameters for development... it is just a matter of show-off quite popular especially among most south-indians....& is gaining similar popularity elsewhere.... Development is all about prosperity, peace & a sense of joy & content... when the people in a particular place are quite content & happy about life, we can define that place to be developed.... & where people are working hard to be happy, that place can be called to be developing.

ok this is getting too boring.... just wanna say sorry to all, whose feelings have been hurt by my comments.... I myself LOVE kolkata from the depth of my heart, & am it's alltime well-wisher....I only wish/hope that everyone forgives me for what I've been commenting on....seriously, I didnt mean any of those

Generosity - Ugly lady ishtyle

Quote:
I have offered chief minister's post to Pranab: Mamata

Kolkata, Nov 4 : Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said she would have no problem if Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee takes the post of West Bengal chief minister if a Trinamool-Congress alliance comes to power after the next assembly elections.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government, which has been ruling the state uninterruptedly for the last 33 years, is facing its biggest electoral challenge in the assembly elections slated next year.

"I have no problem if Pranab-da takes up the post of chief minister after the 2011 assembly elections. If people want this, then I don't have a problem. I have no greed for power or the post of chief minister. I am fighting for the cause of the common people, who are fed up with the atrocities of the CPI-M," Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee said in an interview to private Bengali news channel Star Ananda.

The Trinamool-Congress alliance decimated the CPI-M led Left Front in the state in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The two parties bagged more than two-thirds of the Lok Sabha seats in the state.

"I told Pranab-da that you take up the reins of the state when our alliance comes to power in West Bengal. I have told him that I will give him total support. He laughed it off and told me "have you gone mad?" It's up to the people to decide," said Banerjee.

The Trinamool and the Congress, however, failed to come together in the last civic polls following difference of opinion over seat-sharing arrangements.

Without naming the Congress, Banerjee took a dig at the party and blamed it for the break-up of the alliance in the last civic elections.

"They (Congress) broke the alliance not only during the last civic elections but also in Siliguri and Uluberia civic elections. But people have blessed us and have voted for us in the last civic elections," said Banerjee.

The crack in the Trinamool-Congress alliance came to light when Congress formed Siliguri civic board with the help of Left Front, after both failed to come to an agreement on who will take away the post of mayor.

I knew that all along! She has no leadership ability, all she could do is confrontational politics. The earlier people of Bengal understand that the better it is. Pranab is OK as CM but an understanding between Congress and CPM has to be established before Bengal politics is stabilized.

'Bengal Khuki' named Photo of the Year 2010

Quote:
A photograph featuring a group of girls playing Rugby for the first time at an orphanage outside Kolkata in India has won the IRB/Emirates Airline Rugby Photograph of the Year 2010 competition.

The winning image, taken by Richard Lane and entitled 'Bengal Khuki', was selected by a panel of expert judges from over 300 entries depicting Rugby scenes in 26 countries, under the category Spirit of Rugby.

"Rugby is a sport with a rich history and a strong tradition of fair play, respect, camaraderie, teamwork and friendship and this picture of girls discovering and experiencing these values for the first time perfectly depicts the true Spirit of Rugby," said IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

"It is also a stunning image full of colour, vibrancy and warmth."

The winner was selected by a panel of judges chaired by Paul Morgan (Editor, Rugby World) and including Dave Rogers (Getty Images), Barry Newcombe (Sports Journalists' Association), Joelle Watkins (Corporate Communications Manager, Emirates Airline) and Jim Drewett (Director, Vision Sport Publishing). The judges selected a shortlist of six images before finally confirming Lane's picture as the winner.

His prize is an all inclusive trip for two to the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens on 3-4 December, the opening tournament of the record-breaking 2010/11 HSBC Sevens World Series, courtesy of Emirates Airline.
