Kolkata Municipal Corportaion to sell their own manufactured products [like furniture, dustbins] in open market. They are starting with 12 products. Towards the end of the video some "new" dustbins are shown which will be used to beautify the parks in the city. The dustbins feature paintings from Pather Panchali - the famous Bengali novel.

KOLKATA: Far short of the target for revenue growth and chief minister Mamata Banerjee dead against burdening the populace with new taxes, finance minister Amit Mitra is banking on greater tax compliance by traders to keep the state exchequer churning.
To encourage greater tax compliance and bring more people in the tax net, state finance minister Amit Mitra announced simplification of way bills and a host of e-governance services on Friday. Mitra said traders could generate their way bills online from next week itself. The minister said that new e-governance steps were taken to prevent businessmen from being harassed. "Gradually, tax compliance will increase. We don't want businessmen to be harassed. The new online way bill will be simple. Now, a single document will replace the current two-part way bill. No physical document will be required from now . Hence, there will be no delay and chances of loss or misplacement will not take place. Traders can generate and print their own way bill and need not send it physically," said Mitra. Once the e-governance services are in place, incidents of tax evasion can be informed online "Once information on tax evasion is registered, the informer will get an acknowledgement slip and his identity will remain secret. The information will be verified by the commercial tax commissioner." For more read here

![]() Microsoft may set up R&D centre in Kolkata India Blooms News Service Kolkata, Jan 21 (IBNS) Global software giant Microsoft might set up their Research & Development centre in Kolkata. West Bengal Commerce and Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee said on Friday, "We had a talk with Microsoft India officials on the issue and they are very much interested to set up their R&D centre in the city." At present Microsoft has research centre in Bengaluru in Karnataka. On the occasion of the 'Techvista Kolkata 2012' organised by Microsoft on Friday, he invited the software giant to come to Kolkata and join hands with the state for the technological development and to promote advanced studies in computer science and allied courses. He requested the Indian companies to spend more on R&D to achieve global leadership in terms of advanced product development, so that Indian researchers and scientists could pursue higher studies as career. Citing the example of some developed countries, Chatterjee said that in United State the government spends about 36 pct of their total GDP on R&D , whereas the Asian countries like Japan and China disburse 12.60 and 12.50 pct of their GDP respectively on the same. "But In India it is sheer 2.50 pct of total GDP. So the government needs to expend more on R&D, so that our researchers were able to pursue higher studies and research. Confirming about his government's plan to encourage technological development in the state he said that "we want to attract 25 percent of total Information Technology market of India in our state." He said the state has captured six IT projects of total investment of Rs 1410 crore, which will generate 19,500 direct and 1,25,000 indirect employment. Praising the talent pool of West Bengal, the minister said that "we have a highly productive and talented human resource but 75 pct of them are mismatch." "So,our first priority is to build a specific manpower that will help drive the growth," he said (Reporting by Pratik Singh)

Still if they can set up dustbins along the road al over the Kolkata, it will be good! Also those needs to be cleared up regularly. The other day I saw a picture in TOI, some homeless kids are using dustbins as a shelter in this winter. I just hope these don't become any more shelters. |

Unless I heard the ministers wrong, they have made a blunder in their speech anyway.
The visiting body was MSR - the Microsoft Research division. They are not MSIDC - the India Dev Center for Microsoft. And yet, most probably without even realizing the difference (which is the trend with close to 100% common people in Bengal), our dear leadership asked them to set up "research and development" - a statement blatant enough to show the sheer ignorance. Partha did that (54-58 sec of the video). The MSR guy would have sensed by that one phrase the depth of ignorance and don't know whether will go away with a positive sentiment about developing any of the two - Research or R&D. Talk about calling for disaster by letting semi-literate people run states (semi-literate in IT and not in knowing how to read/write). Why in the whole world can't we have experts running the show rather than politicians? ![]()

parks are a place for strolling, brisk walking, jogging, taking rest -- so that each can find his/her own peace. this is not a place for "entertainment" as is understood by a few people. please see how parks are designed well in developed countries and learn. but that would require a lot of homework and patient effort. |

Investors may get a land breather now Udit Prasanna Mukherji, TNN | Feb 9, 2012, 01.31AM IST KOLKATA: Investors complaining over the "stiff project completion" target in the changed scenario when they had to buy a portion of the land on their own, may now get a breather. The Mamata Banerjee government has decided to relax the project completion target clause in the land lease agreement from three years to a maximum of five years. The move has come as a relief to big investors, particularly in the steel industry, who are yet to get the land under their possession mutated. The relaxation - once approved by chief minister Mamata Banerjee - may help ease out the tension over projects worth over Rs 51,000 crore. The proposal lying with the land revenue department will call for fresh land lease agreements with the new clause. Investors who could not complete the projects within the three-year period ran the risk of losing the land allotted to them under the existing agreement. The pullout would have deprived the state of a total Rs 80,000 crore investment lined up in Bengal. The proposed amendment is likely to clear the uncertainty over eight mega projects in the state - JSW Bengal steel project at Salboni, Jai Balaji steel project at Raghunathpur in Purulia, Adhunik Group project near Asansol, Shyam Steel project at Raghunathpur, Matix fertilizer project in Panagarh, OCL cement project near Salboni and DPSC power project in Haldia. "The new lease agreement is almost ready. The state government has approved it in principle. The government will now give five years instead of the existing three to finish the project, failing which the state will take the land back. Once LR department clears the new draft WBIDC will start signing agreement with the concerned industry," sources added. But the amend will also require a change in the land lease agreement with the requiring body - West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation. Under the new arrangement, the Corporation will assign the lease agreement to the industry concerned. "Earlier WBIDC use to sub-lease the land to industry but this is not legally correct. The industry has also faced problems. In the new format LR department will set a deadline for 5 years to WBIDC in the lease agreement for starting of project. The WBIDC will also have the discretion to fix shorter completion targets for smaller units. Like for steel industry it would be 5 years for small projects that could be less," added sources. Incidentally, JSW Bengal has 4,334 acres for a 3-million tonne steel plant and 300-MW power plant in the first phase with an investment of Rs 20,000 crore. Incidentally, the project is also facing land hurdle as mutation for the entire 4,334 acres is still pending. Jai Balaji has so far been allotted 1,094 acres for 2.5-million tonne steel and 3-million tonne cement plant with an investment of Rs 16,000 crore. Shyam Steel and Ad-hunik have got 600 acres and 505 acres respectively. Shyam Steel has proposed 1.1-million tonne steel plant with an investment of Rs 3,500 crore and Adhunik has proposed an investment of Rs 7,000 crore. Matix has got 500 acres for 1.5 million tonne fertiliser plant with an investment of Rs 4,900 crore. |
