Yes, saw that on google earth looks huge to rejuvenate and it also seems tough to maintain it thereafter if taken up.It is about 1.45 km^2, if taken up seriously it would be really amazing for lake front development works.

Kukrahalli lake in Mysore is 1 km^2 and it comes under Mysore university which has maintained the lake nicely.

BDA/BBMP must think about putting suc huge water bodies for some recreational activities and mint some money from it.They can build some nice amphi theaters or convention centers (hold open space wedding parties) or as you said some huge botanical parks etc etc and make money.use the same for its maintenance and out source it to some private party.

problem is lake chains fed with sewage, so algae develops there.. bellandur overflows to varthur lake..

they are building small parks adjacent to around 30 small lakes.. like u have 30 beaches in a city where people can hang out

they have to build huge sewage treatment plant or bypass sewage from each lake on the chain. they were planning to bypass sewage from bellandur lake (largest in bangalore) but dont know what happened..

Yes you are right Bellandur lake and Varthur lake are more or less linked together by marshy lands,so you mean to say at present sewage is feeding these lakes?

bellandur is very much heart of city, but they are unable to rescue that. so first they have to save bellandur and maybe 10 years after that save varthur lake

here is the bigger map of lake chains:

madiwala-agara-bellandur-varthur and hebbal-nagawara-yellamma and hoskote lake are fed to Ponnaiyar river.

vrishabhavati and arkawathy(TG halli dam) are fed with sewage from west of city.. these 2 rivers later join cauvery at sangama/mekedatu

BANGALORE, June 5, 2010
Ulsoor, Bellandur among the 39 most polluted lakes in city
Raghava M.

Quote:
Our lakes are not only dwindling in number, but those that remain are seriously polluted. This is the picture that has emerged from a report on the pollution levels in the 86 lakes of the city (in Bangalore South, Bangalore North, Bangalore East and Anekal taluks) released by the Lake Development Authority (LDA).

While lakes such as Bellandur, Varthur, Ulsoor, Puttenahalli and Jakkur are among the 39 severely polluted lakes; 47 lakes, including Madiwala, Nagavara, Agara, Yediyur, Lalbagh, Sankey and Hebbal have been found to be moderately polluted.

The study was carried out by the LDA in order to assess the health of these water bodies and devise programmes for their development. The Sriram Institute, a private organisation, was assigned the task of studying the water quality.
Method

Water quality was analysed over a year. Nine parameters were prescribed to assess water quality, namely, saturation, presence of faecal coliforms, pH levels, biological oxygen demand (BOD), temperature, total phosphates and, nitrates, turbidity and total solids. Water was analysed during the April-June, July-September, October-December and January-March quarters, and an average of the readings for each lake taken.

The report that was submitted to the LDA on Wednesday will be forwarded to the stakeholders — Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore Development Authority and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board for necessary action, Chief Conservator of Forests (LDA) U.V. Singh, told The Hindu on Friday.

Nicole focuses on B'lore lakes
TNN, Dec 24, 2010, 03.49am IST
Tags:Namma Bengaluru hudugi|Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria|Mark Robinson|Bangalore beauty
Quote:
BANGALORE: Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria has picked a unique cause to highlight: Bangalore's woeful water situation. Of particular interest to her is the state of the city's lakes.

Arriving home after her triumphant journey to Vietnam where she won the Miss Earth 2010 title, a visibly delighted Nicole said, "In Bangalore, the way we waste water is ridiculous. I'm starting off here by supporting the Bangalore lake-cleaning cause and will also be the face for it. I feel responsible to do my part for this cause. I'll be visiting schools, colleges and spreading the message of saving water."

Water conservation, incidentally, was the theme of the pageant at Vietnam.

Nicole said, "I plan to spread that message in my city as well. I'm excited to start at home and am happy I have this opportunity. It's the most ideal,'' she said. She is also going to promote the reintroduction of cycle-rickshaws in the city and also the use of bicycles, added her father, Ian Faria.

The wait for her arrival was a long one. "I'm excited to meet her after a long time. This is a huge moment for me. She's going to spend time with family and friends for more than a week before she heads to Philippines," Ian said.

The Bangalore beauty, clad in a shimmering black dress, arrived at the Bengaluru International Airport along with her mother, Anita Faria, from Hyderabad at 1.15pm.

"I'm happy and ecstatic to be back home after a long time," said the beauty queen. About her plans for her stay, she said, "I'm going to spend my time with family and friends. There is going to be a grand celebration with all the family members coming together after a long time. This Christmas is going to be bigger than the others I've had, with many gifts and fun. I can't wait to go out, meet friends, eat idlis and dosas."

Not only is she the glam girl of Bangalore, she is also being a responsible one. "My future, as I see, will be a bright one, but with the crown comes great responsibility. I can't wait to start my journey around the world and I'm also getting a lot of support," she added.

On the Vietnam pageant, she said, "Vietnam was amazing. It was a lot like India — the places, the people, the shops, everything. I loved Nathrang the most. It was beautiful. There were a lot of tree-planting sessions. I have a tree with my name there. We visited many schools, NGOs and educated people.''

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION

The Namma Bengaluru hudugi is staying home to celebrate New Year. Asked for her resolution, she said: "To do better than I did yesterday or any other day and everyday of my life. I am my own competition and I beat myself every day to do better."

The feeling of exhilaration still exists in the Faria family about her winning the crown. "I could do all of this only because of my parents, my brother, who motivated me and pushed me to the top. They came to Vietnam for my pageant, my aunt also flew down from the US. I'm grateful to Mark Robinson who has been really supportive," she said.

War memorial park to host car parking
TNN, Dec 24, 2010, 03.49am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: The Indira Gandhi musical fountain is in the news again: BBMP plans to build a basement car parking.

In a rush to provide parking facility for the four-wheelers that come to Vidhana Soudha, high court, Raj Bhavan, police commissioner's office, Legislators' Home, Akashvani and Nehru planetarium, the BBMP has already called for tenders.

On Thursday, BBMP commissioner Siddaiah inspected the spot and has ordered for the speedy commissioning of the work. "It will not be a controversial project. The land belongs to public works department and maintained by horticulture department. We have to get clearance from both departments. We cannot take up the work if we do not get clearance from these departments. Six small trees, including a mango tree, would be axed," Siddaiah told TOI.

The basement parking will be accommodating over 250 four-wheelers and costs about Rs 2 crore.

Environmentalist A N Yellappa Reddy told TOI: "The widening of the road in front of the fountain also led to chopping of trees. Later came the war memorial which axed trees despite vehement protest. Now, some more trees are going to be uprooted in the name of car parking. This is just another hasty decision of BBMP."

Four years ago, Yellappa Reddy, as the chairman of Biodiversity committee, had sent a report to the government suggesting to develop tree parks inside race course, palace, central college cricket ground. "Contrary to our suggestion, the BBMP is wanting to come up with concrete buildings inside a green hub," he added.

Lakes stink, panel head sets deadline for change
TNN, Dec 25, 2010, 05.06am IST

Quote:
BANGALORE: What welcomed the chairman of the standing committee on horticulture, BBMP, on Friday as he inspected some lakes in the city was the sight of cattle grazing on the stinking lake beds.

Puttenahalli, Dorekere and Uttarahalli lakes were inspected as rejuvenation had been taken up there for the past two years, but hardly any progress was seen.

Chairman K Ranganna set a deadline of one week for the removal of encroachments in the surroundings of the three lakes that he visited. "There is a need for resurveying the lake property. A slum has encroached Puttenahalli lake despite rehabilitation having been provided for the same in Bettadasapura. The slum must be vacated," said Ranganna. Puttenahalli lake was initially spread over 13 acres 25 guntas, but now more than an acre of land in its surroundings has been encroached.

All 183 lakes in the city have been encroached. At Dorekere lake, BBMP has taken up work worth Rs 2 crore to set up a sewerage water treatment plant. The plant would be treating 1 mld of sewerage water.

Sewerage water allowed to enter the lakes is one of the reasons for the depletion of the lake. Clearing the encroachments has not been easy as most of the cases are pending at the court, a senior BBMP official with the horticulture department, said.

This is the earth she wants to change
TNN, Dec 25, 2010, 05.06am IST

Quote:
BANGALORE: Bangalore beauty Nicole Faria wants to see Bangalore regain its charm. She has started work for her cause of water conservation, and her exclusive photoshoot with The Times of India kicked off her campaign to highlight the condition of the city's lakes.

"The place reeks of filth, it's horrible. Waste is dumped here, some serious action should be taken towards it. I would love to see Bangalore opt for water soil Ganeshas, where soil from rivers is used. The idols are easily degradable and it would be a form of recycling," she said.

The clean-up is due to start some time in the second week of February, and will cover 14 lakes in the city. "We already have 3,000 volunteers for it and funding may be done by a charitable organization from the US," added Ian Faria, her father.

Nicole, determined to make our city cleaner and greener, has tied up with the Rotaract Club and has already completed a tree planting session in her neighbourhood. She plans to pursue it in different parts of the city. "The city has changed a lot over the past few years, there is litter everywhere, people just throw plastic and non-degradable things on the roads and in water bodies. There is a lot of pollution, so I am promoting cycle rickshaws, which will provide employment and also help create a better environment. I also want to educate children about saving the environment and inculcate in them the habit of being environment-friendly," she added.

With the Rotaract Club, Bangalore, she plans to promote rainwater harvesting through roof funnel pipes which lead underground, and has also tied up with Usolar to promote solar energy to generate power and electricity. She has also linked up with an Australian company producing solar panels which generate adequate power to run air-conditioners for about six to eight hours. "It's a really good thing to support. We can make the maximum use of nature and resources available in abundance but going unused. If we don't take a step towards this, what will be India's future? I would love to see Bangalore get back its beauty," she said.

Illegal houses at Puttenahalli Lake will be razed within a week: Palike
Published: Saturday, Dec 25, 2010, 10:46 IST
By BK Lakshmikantha | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

Quote:
About 70 houses, which have encroached the Puttenahalli Lake at JP Nagar, will be demolished within a week. This was announced by chairman of the BBMP standing committee for horticulture K Raganna on Friday.

The chairman, during his inspection, was irked by the slow progress in the development of the lake and for not removing the encroachment which was hindering the progress.

“The houses will be removed within a week andlake development should be taken up soon, ” he said.

The Puttenahalli Lake stretches across 13.25 acres of which about 1.21 acres has been encroached upon. The BBMP was able to clear about 4 guntas of encroachment.

“About 70 houses had llegally come up at Lakshmi Layout at Lake Place. Seven years back, the local leaders had illegally sold the place to the people taking from each of them Rs50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The families are increasing day by day,” said Puttenahalli ward corporator L Ramesh.

“BBMP commissioner also inspected the lake and served notices to the illegally occupied people. But on humanitarian grounds, the local MLA had agreed to provide them land, power and water at Bettadaspura near Electronic City. But these people are not ready to go there. We will give them time to move out of the place. If they don’t agree, we will demolish their illegal houses,” Ramesh added.
The members first visited the Uttarahalli Moge Lake near Shivaganga Layout which spreads across 15 acres 16 guntas. According to the BBMP officials, about 8 guntas had been encroached by the public. So a resurvey of the lake areas has been in progress.
The total project allotment for the lake development is Rs376.80 lakh. The work started in June 2009 and the first phase of the work like de-silting, embankment and riveting had been completed for Rs74.98 lakh. The second phase of work is in progress for Rs144.87 lakh.
BBMP officials are working on inlet water drain where the sewage water is diverted to the channel. Works on RCC culvert, downstream improvement and watchman’s shed are also in progress. The depth of the lake is 2.1 metres. Earlier, the water-storing capacity used to be 40,000 cubic metres. The capacity will be increased to 75,000 cubic metres after desilting.Officials said a sewage treatment plant (STP) will be set up near the lake for Rs160 lakh. The tender process is under way and the plant will be set up in a few months.
While the BBMP officials are saying that the lake land has been encroached upon, N Gopi, a resident of the areas, said they do not have any proper map of the area.
“The forest department came and surveyed the lake and constructed fencing around the lake to avoid the encroachment. After that, the BBMP surveyed the area and finally the thalisdhar surveyed it. The three survey sketches look different. After the chain fencing was done by the forest department, I constructed a house on the other side of the fencing.
But the BBMP is saying that I have encroached 150 ft of their area. So I have requested the BBMP to resurvey the area which they are doing. If they find that I have encroached the area, let them demolish my house,” Gopi said. The committee members also visited the 2.6-acre Dorai Kere at Uttarahalli. The project was estimated at Rs8 crore and it included a Rs2.10-crore STP.The project was taken up by Sspcon System Ltd on BOT system. Of the 10 mld sewage water from the drain, 9 mld water will be left on the pipeline while 1 mld water will be treated.

Suresh Kumar frowns on basement car park
Sunitha Rao R, TNN, Dec 26, 2010, 01.57am IST

Quote:
BANGALORE: In a twist to the basement car park issue at the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park, urban development minister Suresh Kumar has voiced his displeasure over the BBMP's project. He told Sunday Times of India that basement car parking had certainly no place inside a park. "I have never heard of such a 'novel' project being implemented anywhere. In what sense can a park be a better place to park vehicles? BBMP must look for a different place to build the parking lot, if parking is really an issue on Chowdaiah Road."

The minister's views could give a fillip to citizens fighting for their handful of green spaces. He had earlier opposed BBMP's controversial TDR scheme too.

According to Suresh Kumar, this move would set a bad precedent for other parks. "Even if it is an underground facility, the nature of the park will change. It is the only space where natural rainwater harvesting takes place. This purpose will be defeated if parking space is provided. I have no clue as to who is behind such an idea in the BBMP," he frowned. "The government should advise BBMP to withdraw this proposal and find better space somewhere else."

BBMP defers underground parking plan
Aarthi R, TNN, Dec 27, 2010, 05.58am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Here's some good news. BBMP has deferred its plan to construct the underground parking complex at the Indira Gandhi musical fountain park near Raj Bhavan. Commissioner Siddaiah said, 'the project will be taken up only if the government approves it.'

"We have no intention of taking up a project that has already invited so much public wrath. We'll go ahead only after consulting the government," he told TOI. Urban development minister Suresh Kumar had also condemned the idea of underground parking within a park, saying that it would set a precedent for similar projects in other public parks.

When a lakebed turns into a crematorium
Sunitha Rao R, TNN, Dec 29, 2010, 05.23am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: A city of 70 lakh people has just 10 electric crematoria and seven graveyards. Lack of space to bury or cremate the dead has resulted in lake beds turning into crematoria in the city.

Wilson Garden cemetery is spread across 25 acres of land and gets not less than 20 bodies a day

While on one hand, the villages around Bellandur lake are using the lake bed to cremate or bury the dead bodies, on the other hand, the former landlords of Raghuvanahalli are relentlessly building tomb stones for their ancestors. The residents of Raghuvanahalli near Kanakapura Main Road, a BDA layout, have brought the issue to the notice of BBMP authorities, but in vain.

"The BDA-approved layout now has tomb stones built over bodies buried several years ago. The landlords who earlier gave away land for layout formation to BBMP are now building tomb stones, but it is illegal. The KMC Act section 391 to 398 clearly says it is illegal to bury the dead in the place which is not designated. In spite of this, BBMP is not willing to take action," says Sharath Babu, a resident of Raghuvanahalli.

Fund allocation Nil

BBMP earmarked a whopping Rs 5 crore for the beautification of burial grounds but not a single rupee has been allocated so far. For the development of a burial ground at Chamarajpet, Rs 50 lakh was provided. For improvements to the burial ground at K R Puram, a sum of Rs 2.5 crore has been proposed. Another Rs 50 lakh is provided for development of a burial ground at R T Nagar. For maintenance of other burial grounds, an amount of Rs 1.5 crore has been sanctioned.

As the existing burial grounds and crematoria are overloaded due to the rapid growth of Bangalore's population, the city corporation has planned to set up additional crematoria at various places in the city.

DEPUTY MAYOR INSPECTS

On Tuesday, deputy mayor N Dayanand inspected the Wilson Garden cemetery and T R Mill (near Chamarajpet) burial ground. "The city's cemeteries and burial grounds are in bad shape due to lack of maintenance. There are only seven major graveyards in the city. We are in the process of identifying more places where a basic civic amenity like crematorium can be set up. Maintenance is another larger issue, which is yet to tackled," he said.

Wilson Garden cemetery is spread across 25 acres of land and gets not less than 20 bodies a day, whereas the T R Mills crematorium provides space for over 40 dead bodies a day. "At T R Mills crematorium, we have scrapped the idea of establishing an electric furnace and instead, with the help of firewood, this crematorium has the facility to cremate 12 bodies at a time. It is being developed at a cost of Rs 1.16 crore," said B V Ganesh, Chamarajpet corporator, during the inspection.

However, the issue of cleanliness at graveyards is yet to be tackled, deputy mayor said. "Just because I had gone there, the workers at Wilson Garden cemetery had made last-minute attempts to clean the graveyard. The graveyard has been in bad shape for the past five years and could not be cleaned by the workers in one or two days," he added.
