Night safari at Bannerghatta Biological Park moves a step closer to reality
Published: Friday, Dec 31, 2010, 8:29 IST
By Odeal D'Souza | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA
Quote:
Karnataka high court on Thursday gave a conditional green signal for the proposed night safari to be implemented at the Bannerghatta Biological Park while hearing a petition challenging the plan for nocturnal trips through the safari.

BR Deepak, a city-based advocate filed a PIL contending that granting permission for night safari was against the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

If night safari is allowed, it could lead to man-animal conflict. According to the act, wildlife should not be disturbed by vehicular movements. Besides the Central Zoo Authority is not the body to accord permission for conducting safari, he argued.

The state government got permission for the Biological National Park and not for the safari. In the 25,000 acres of the Bannerghatta National Park, around 1,807 acres of the land will be used for biological activities.

It is against section 35 of the Wildlife Protection Act, Deepak contended. A division bench pronounced the order that the night safari should be implemented according to the project report submitted by the state government. However, while implementing the project, hygiene should be maintained at the park, the court observed.

The Karnataka high court on June 16 had reserved the case for judgment. According to state government’s detailed project report submitted to the high court on 16 June 2010, all precautions will be taken to ensure conservation of wildlife and vegetation at the site.

Minimum space and construction material will be used for implementing the night safari concept, besides there would be no construction on water bodies, forest food would not be used and no labour camps will also be allowed.

Sewage choking Shettykere lake
Bharath Kumar N , Bangalore, Jan 5, DHNS : :

Quote:
Shettykere, which until a year ago provided a safe haven for winged visitors and where people enjoyed boating, is now choked by sewage water flowing from multi-storeyed apartments in Subramanyapura.

No longer a favourite spot: Shettykere lake choking with hyacinth. Reckless flow of sewage water has converted the lake into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, where people fear to tread.

The lake was saved from the clutches of land sharks owing to political intervention.

However, soon shanties came up in the vicinity encroaching the tank bed. In no time the whole lake was covered with hyacinths, recalled elderly residents of Subramanyapura.

“The multi-storeyed residential complex which let go untreated sewage water directly into the lake are to be blamed. More worrisome is the silence of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) assistant executive engineer, whose office is located just a stone’s throw away from the lake,” said environmentalist Leo Saldanha.

Residents who earlier took great pride in the once beautiful lake are now unhappy with their choice of location.

“We are living in sub-human conditions amidst wreathing filth and unbearable stench. Recently fish in the lake were killed due to contamination of water.

Mosquito menace has grown manifold and we are living in perpetual fear of the outbreak of dengue, chikungunya and malaria,” said Raju, a resident. In addition to this, people immerse Ganesha idols in the lake, which is on the brink of extinction, he added.

“In my childhood I loved playing near the lake. Now I am afraid even to go anywhere near it. Why is the Lake Development Authority remaining a mute spectator to the death of Shettykere lake?” lamented Pramod, a student and resident of Bhuvaneshwarinagar.

Another resident Lakshmamma urged that a compound wall be built around the lake to halt encroachment and flow of sewage water.
