Guv to give honorary doctorate to Murthy
TNN, Feb 8, 2011, 07.08am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Protests and war of words have worked in this case. Taking note of views expressed at the 77th All-India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, governor H R Bhardwaj has agreed to confer honorary doctorate on litterateur M Chidananda Murthy.

Chidananda Murthy

The governor withheld his approval last week following media reports that Murthy had reportedly endorsed the church attacks and damned conversions. The doctorate was to be given by Bangalore University and the governor had approved the names of Kannada poet K S Nissar Ahmed and artist B K S Varma. A Raj Bhavan communique on Monday said: "The governor holds the state intelligentsia in high esteem.... and has no hesitation in approving his name."

HC upholds Katta Jr's legal objections
TNN, Feb 9, 2011, 03.47am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: The Karnataka high court on Tuesdayrejected the memo filed on behalf of the Lokayukta police seeking permission to allow former advocate general B V Acharya to plead on their behalf. The court was hearing the case relating to criminal petitions filed by Katta Jagadish, city corporator and son of former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu.

Allowing the legal objections raised by counsel representing Katta Jagadish, Justice V Jagannathan observed that Acharya was not appointed by the state government to plead in the case as a special public prosecutor and a special public prosecutor who is already appointed in the case cannot re-delegate his power. Even in the January 28 notification, it was only an instruction for appointing Acharya as special counsel, the judge said.
Its victory after victory for bjp govt. that yeddy did not resign is itself a big victory. 2008 election was we ktaka people's mandate to yeddy so it is him for cm as long as bjp is in power is the decision taken by bjp high command.

Talking

Quote:
Mangalore, Feb 8 (9:15 p.m): Noted restaurateur from Mulki and former Karnataka Sahitya Parishat president Harikrishna Punaroor has slammed CM Yeddyurappa's plan to get a Rs 25-crore statue of Kannada identity and icon Bhuvaneshwari erected on the lines of Statue of Liberty in Bangalore.

The CM had made the announcement at the 77th all-India Kannada conclave held in the state capital earlier this week.

Punaroor, in his statement, has urged the CM first to restore the Shiradi ghat road to a decent level before thinking of setting up a statue of Kannada Bhuvaneshwari.

Punaroor said the CM had stated it to win applause. Mangalore and Bangalore being key cities of the state, the connectivity is vital. The Shiradi road has been in a miserable state for over ten years. He points out that the state's MPs and MLAs have been flying most of the time and seeks to know who would take care of the common man's route.

He also says that it is improper for the state leaders to shirk their responsibility saying that it is a national highway and it is the union government's problem. The union government had released Rs 100 crores which had been squandered over poor quality, which only succeeded in filling some pockets. Now the public works minister is seeking additional Rs 150 crore from the centre, he adds.

He further says that the all-India Kannada Sammelana has just concluded and that another Rs 50 crore should not be wasted on the World Kannada Convention. He compares the Shiradi road to the sari of Kannada Bhuvaneshwari and says the sari is tattered and the modesty of Bhuvaneshwari is in a semi-bared state. By repairing the road, her honour and modesty could be protected, says Punaroor very cryptically.

Punaroor has requested the chief minister to travel by the Shiradi road at least once and understand the Kannadigas' woes. He has urged him to respond to the people's necessities while in power.

He has concluded by saying that if he does that the people would pray for his welfare and that of his family.

Demo held in three places opposing Puttur police officer's transfer

Quote:
Mangalore, February 11: Several organisations led by the Popular Front of India held protests in three places in Dakshina Kannada on Thursday against the transfer of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Amit Singh.

Mr. Singh's recent promotion and subsequent transfer to Bangalore comes in the wake of an incident in Bantwal town in which Mr. Singh allegedly assaulted Bantwal Urban Development Authority Chairman Govind Prabhu on February 8.

Late that night, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and Puttur MLA Mallika Prasad had staged a dharna in front of Mr. Singh's residence in Puttur.

Representatives of People's Union for Civil Liberties, Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) and Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV) joined the protest condemning Mr. Singh's transfer.

Victor D'Silva of PUCL said: “There is protection for those who indulge in “rowdyism” by staging a protest in front of an IPS officer's house in the night, but not for an honest officer.”

DSS district convenor S.P. Anand said even elected representatives such as the local MLA and MP for the district had participated in the protest.

Member of the district unit of the KKSV Mohammed Kakkinje said Mr. Singh was targeted because the BJP workers could not free the accused who were being questioned in a case of throwing stones at a mosque in Bantwal taluk.

District Committee member of the PFI Hamid T.S. said in a communally sensitive region like Dakshina Kannada there was a need for officers who “treated everybody equal under the law”.

“Even though he has been promoted, the Government has not disclosed his post,” he said, and added that the Government was setting a dangerous trend.

He urged the Governor to revoke his transfer.

A similar protest was held by Popular Front of India Bantwal district unit in front of Taluk office, BC Road.

Speaking on the occasion, Abdul Saleem, DK District Secretary, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), said that Popular Front will raise its voice for the citizens if the country who undergo trouble by the fascist government irrespective of which community he belongs to.

The BJP government in Karnataka which experienced the worst political affairs in the history of Indian politics is not allowing the sincere police officers to work freely in their stations, said Abdul Saleem. Although, ASP Amith Singh is not assaulted the Bantwal Urban Development Authority Chairman Govind Prabhu, the BJP leaders including Puttur MLA Mallika Prasad had staged a dharna in front of ASP’s residence in Puttur while Mr. Singh’s wife was at home alone which is a shameful act, he stated.

Popular Front of India wants peace in this land which is possible if there is a presence of sincere officers, he disclosed.

The transfer is a complete misuse of the ruling power and an insult to values of honesty, said Hameed Salmara, Secretary of Puttur Legislative Assembly, SDPI.

Akbar Ali, member of DK district council, Popular Front of India delivered the key-note address.

Shahul Hameed Parliya, President, Bantwal Legislative Assembly, SDPI, S H Shahul Hameed, President of Bantwal Division PFI and many others were present in the event.

CM in early-budget rush to save gaddi
N D Shiva Kumar, TNN, Feb 14, 2011, 12.15am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Fear of legal action and political compulsions have been cited as the reasons for chief minister B S Yeddyurappa breaching tradition and presenting the state budget ahead of the Union budget. The alleged land scams and nepotism have made the opposition, governor and the BJP top brass breathe down Yeddyurappa's neck.

IMPLICATIONS

Financial experts, however, do not approve of his action and feel the state budget should be presented after the Union budget. "The state budget should be in line with the Union one. The Union budget is fixed and presented on the last day of February. It can't be changed. If states present their budget ahead of the Centre, then they will miss an opportunity to bring their budget in line with the Union budget. If it is not in line, then both will be working with cross-purposes,'' said Prof Narendra Pani of National Institute of Advanced Studies.

Also, for instance, if the railway minister announces a project for Karnataka and seeks the state's contribution, it will be difficult if the state budget is already presented. However, officials argue that in such cases it would be accommodated in the supplementary estimates.

Besides, in the absence of a clear picture about resources from the Centre, the state budget may be financially unpredictable. In the 2010-11 budget, the total receipts were Rs 68,564 crore, while the total expenditure was Rs 70,063 crore. In this, share of central taxes was Rs 9060.09 crore, grants from the Centre Rs 5530.47 crore and loans Rs 1,142 crore.

No extension of deadline to submit LPG documents in Karnataka
Published: Tuesday, Feb 15, 2011, 8:31 IST
By Srikanth Hunasavadi | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

Quote:
Food and civil supplies minister Shobha Karandlaje on Monday said that the February 19 deadline for submitting LPG and RR number details to weed out bogus ration cards would not be extended.

“After the last date, we will check all the details manually and gas supply will be stopped to the consumers who have submitted fake documents. Bangalore has 23 lakh domestic gas connections, of which details have been submitted regarding 15 lakh connections through hand, fax, post, and e-mail. We hope documents on the remaining connections would be submitted immediately," Karandlaje said.

“Through this initiative, we are trying to check bogus ration cards and also the use of domestic gas cylinders for commercial purposes. Most agencies in the city are making money by diverting the domestic gas cylinders for commercial use,” she said.
At present, it is very difficult to get new gas connections. However, once the illegal gas connections are weeded out, all eligible consumers will get gas connections immediately, she said.
No power cut

Karandlaje, who is in charge of the energy ministry as well, said that there would be no unscheduled power cuts during the summer. The state is fully geared to meet the demand, which is likely to touch about 170 million units per day during March and April.

The state will purchase 1300 MW from Chhattisgarh to meet the growing demand and to ensure that there will be no power cuts during summer. The demand touched 164 million units on February 12 and the power companies managed to meet the demand, she said.

The minister said 500 MW of power was expected to flow into the power grid by September-end when the second unit of the Bellary power plant would start production. The 500MW capacity thermal power plant at Udupi was also expected to commence operations by year end, she said.

Milk gets dearer by Rs 2
TNN, Feb 15, 2011, 11.38pm IST

BANGALORE: Nandini milk prices have been hiked by Rs 2 per litre. The new rate came into effect on Tuesday, said Karnataka Milk Federation, which has also released the revised rates for milk, curd and other dairy products for Bangalore and other areas like Mandya, Mysore, Tumkur and Kolra.

However, north-Karnataka and Dakshina Kannada milk unions, who have to procure bulk of the milk from other unions, have to pay for transportation and other costs too. They will have to pay Re 1 extra per litre than their counterparts in the south, KMF managing director, A S Premanath, said in a statement.
