Students learn Linux

Schoolchildren participating in 'Etoys' at P.A. College of Engineering in Mangalore on Thursday

Over 200 of them turned up at FOSS-related events
Quote:
More than 200 students from schools and pre-university (PU) colleges in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod participated in competitions based on open-source software in a city college on Thursday. The event titled “Byte-Struck '12” was held at P.A. College of Engineering (PACE), to create awareness about free open-source software (FOSS) among high school and PU students.

FOSS is non-proprietary software.

Deviprasath, a student at PACE and one of the co-ordinators for the event, told The Hindu that the aim of the event was to apprise the students of the fact that Linux could be interactive.

Workshops

The event included two workshops. Students of class 8, 9, and 10 participated in the workshop titled “Build Your Own Blocks” (BYOB); and finished an assignment that required them to use basic programming skills. The assignment was an introduction to writing simple codes using open-source software. Since it is more visual and has drag-and-drop features, it is user-friendly and meant for entry-level users of FOSS such as schoolchildren.

The other workshop “Etoys” boasted a higher difficulty level than BYOB and aimed at familiarising PU students with writing programs using open- source software.

Local users

There is a Linux Users Group (LUG) in Mangalore. Two groups employ open-source software in Mangalore. One group includes the students from the Department of Information Science and Computer Science of PACE, students of National Institute of Technology (NIT-K), Surtathkal make-up the other group.

Aravind, a PACE student and an organiser of the event, said they were publicising the idea that anybody could use Linux. “Linux is not for geeks, it is for all and it is user-friendly,” he said. While 107 teams of 214 students participated in BYOBs, 37 teams of 74 students participated in Etoys, he said.

Before the workshops commenced, the students participated in an informal quiz. Pranav, Sharad, Rushab and Preethesh, all students of Sharada Vidyalaya, said that Linux had a good design, was secure and could be personalised.

On the other hand, it couldn’t support new applications, and games were for Windows platform, they said.

Earlier, the Principal of PACE, S.A. Khan, said that budding engineers should start thinking of what they could do with open-source software.

The Hindu was the media partner for the event.
Damn one should kick these Microsoft software..

We are helpless as many of our professional software are compatible with Linux only

CM Assured to form Annigeri (birth place of Poet Pampa) a new taluk.

After formation of Kittur as Taluk, every one is demanding for the new Taluk.

People from Alnavar (big village in Dharwad taluk, Dharwad sitrict), Tadas (a very big village coming under Shiggaon Taluk, haveri district) demanded a new taluks.

At the same time people from villages coming under Dharwad taluk which are supposed to join the new taluk Kittur have raised with Mr Shettar not join to Kittur taluk.

In my openion, few villages from Dharwad should be joined to new taluk Kittur and then Kittur should be made part of Dharwad district, as Kittur is near to Dharwad than Belgaum.

They should have done it when Dharwad Dist was trifurcated (Gadag,Haveri & Dharwad) ......Still they can think of Adjoining Talukas Like......Kittur (New),
Haliyal (UK),Mundgod (UK) can creat Dandeli as new Taluka......all these places are near Hubli-Dharwad....and make Dharwad a larger one to some extent.

Correct Yaqoob, they should form Tadas, Alnavar, Annigeri, Halyal new taluks and join to Dharwad district along with Kittur, then Dharwad district will become a full fledged district again.

Fishing in troubled waters in South India

Quote:
BANGALORE: It's fishing in the troubled waters in South India!

During the southern zonal council meeting in Bangalore on Friday, the CMs of the south Indian states blamed each other over the issue of fishing. They say there is frequent friction between the fishermen, but think the problem lies in the neighbouring state's unscientific and untraditional ways.

Fishermen from TN are using unscientific and untraditional ways of capturing brood stock of cuttle fish and squids in the territorial waters of Karnataka. This has led to depletion in the brood stock and destroyed the trawl nets of local fishermen,'' complained Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar. He said this had led to clashes between local fishermen with neighboring states' fishermen, some times leading to law and order problem.

Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa (her written speech was read out in the meeting) equates AP fishermen to pirates. The TN fishermen are often abducted by the AP fishermen from the deep sea off AP and released later after the payment of ransom,'' she said.

It's not all. She accuses Kerala and Sri Lanka of harassing TN fishermen. Due to professional rivalry, the boats and other fishing implements of the Kanniyakumari district fishermen who conduct fishing in Kerala waters have been at times damaged by Kerala fishermen in the past. The Sri Lankan navy attacks and harasses TN and Puducherry fishermen,'' stated Jayalalithaa.

Karnataka CM advocated for creating awareness about banning all unscientific methods of fishing cuttle fish and squids among fishermen of other states. Kerala government suggested a few solutions to the problem.
