I really wish this thread had less blabbing and more pictures. I guess I'll have to go by there myself to see what is going on :-)

Come on, 432 Park can't even be compared with One57 and Torre Verre.

He means they will look good together.

Anyway, I hope you guys are right about the facade because if those renders are accurate it will look anything but sleek. After all, renders had me thinking One57 would be blue and the 1wtc antennae would be rust red.

I really dig the simplicity of this building...if the facade turns out nice I think people will be pleasantly surprised.

Buildings usually look better in real life than in renderings.

I have the opposite view as a lot of you. I'm actually thrilled by the design, but disgusted by the height. Its going to looks very strange to have a 1400 foot tall skiny building coming out of midtown. This would be more appropriate at 1100-1200 feet tall.

I don't think that is what was meant. The point is that its height on the east side will balance those other towers on the west side so that the Midtown skyline stays balanced.

Also, you can't expect every tower to be really special or unique. The Bloomberg Tower isn't. The Travelers Insurance isn't. The GE building (Roc Center) isn't. ANd the Met Life tower is a concrete monstrosity. But they add to the skyline and other buildings with more unique designs play off of them. This may be the same.

I like how the Chrysler Building reflects off the south facade.

Think it's supposed to be ESB. Doesn't matter since you shouldn't be able to see either. Wrong angle.

I think it actually matches the aesthetics of the uptown neighborhood considering the simple and sleek design. And the minimalist skin attracts just enough attention to be a nice addition to the skyline, while not being a distractingly misfit and uncomfortable on the eye. Not all new developments in my opinion need to have a complex science-fiction design....
My only problem is with crowning it as the tallest building in nyc.

That's what I'm saying, wait until this is built to judge it, renderings hide many things that real life doesn't.

Isn't the facade supposed to be brushed nickel or whatever? It doesn't look like the renderings reflect that.

Either way, this building's success depends on the completion of and subsequent balance provided by the other 57th St. supertalls.

In one of the 3D renderings there is a lot of relief to the surface..the window
frames appear deeply inset with glass protruding back out...a bit like a bay window...or a prismatic effect....

I am not too worried about all the critics of this building...you can't please everyone. I do find it hard to believe that this building will not become important...like it or not. This is being built in my back yard and frankly I am very excited about it. Even though the building seems very narrow because of it's extreme height.. (I was looking at the site this morning from various points from the far sides of Park and far side of 57th) the building footprint will not seem so small at the street level. On 57 st the six story retail space will have a commanding presence...presenting a square facade to the street.(93' by 93')(This will serve as a visual 'gate' for the for the tower where the square is repeated as the aesthetic and structural geometry of tower. On 56 Street the open plaza will provide a much needed break in the street facade wall and if the transparent retail structure on the corner of 56 and park in maintained will present an open vista to the tower from Park Avenue...I hope they will also open up an ally way(from 57 to 56) between the tower and 450 park building...this is hinted at in some of the street level plans...right now the small plaza is just a dark useless dead end. I hope that Harry keeps a hand in this because what he did for the GM building was brilliant.

a bunch of very heavy I beams unloaded today

Well, it's your opinion. But I don't see what's so horrible about this building, really.

This thing isn't skinny at all... it looks like the width of a manhattan block (or 1/3 of an avenue block)

This is very thin. It's about 90 feet wide by 90 feet deep. That's extremely thin for a 1,400 foot tower.
