the base area is a mixture of steel and concrete.

just the simple fact that there are different trades/contractors that will have to either share the site, or work in sequence will draw this out on a schedule.

Good progress being made. Tight for the trucks to get by now. The excavator has to turn to get its ass out of the way.

They must have a pause right now cause the only work I see atm is the small blue excavator moving things in the pit

It is 3 pm here - the workday is done for them. They go from 7 am to 3 pm Eastern Standard Time.

Definitely not at this one. They've always been leaving pretty promptly at 3 pm

Went today and boy is that Hitachi digging deep! That tripple boom weights 90 tons give or take and it's ass was coming far off the ground, so far the operator would have to come out of the cab and make sure he wasn't sliding into the pit. It was a sight to see it teetering on the front of the tracks while no one was in the cab. I thought there was less dirt down there but loading trucks all day today still leaves them with more dirt down there. Maybe Friday they will be done digging out?

Some of the best action shots I've seen on SSC - thanks for sharing

It definitely looks a bit dangerous. I think I saw a mini rock slide on the cam today.

One thing I wonder is can the operator even see what he is scooping up given that it is far below him and at a steep angle? If not, does he operate blind or is there someone radeoing instructions?

I'm pretty sure they'll be done by Friday - unless this falls in the pit

325ccr, would you say that hitatchi is the size of a PC800? I am trying to compare it to something I know

There were a few close calls where I thought he was going in! lol. To be honest I'm surprised he even took the machine as far off the ground as he did. As for seeing I'm sure he can but not for long

jacko, PC800 is correct

Those operators really know what they're doing. I've been watching a couple of times on the webcams. Impressive.

thejacko5,

I'm not as familiar with the Komatsu machines, but the Hitachi on this job may be comparable with a Caterpillar 385B L excavator, whose operating weight is 190,370 lbs. However, the addition of the second member on the Hitachi on this job adds a bit more weight.

Just joined up from the UK. I work as a project engineer for the construction industry and i love this project. Wish we had something like this over here that we are able to watch with the cameras. They seem to be progressing really well, not long now till the crane goes up, maybe a couple of weeks worth excavating and slab laying left then the site will be ready for handover.

Sounds good. If you understand things as they are happening and want to give descriptions for us who are not experts in construction that would be great.

They are making big progress. You can clearly see a clean back wall in the 56th cam now.

Yer will do. They are cracking on with the slab now the sand blinding and black membrane is going down. Still a bit of excavation remaining as on the 57th street cam the mound is still quite large against the wall.

I still cant get over how the machine is basically sat in the street doing the work, if that was in the UK the street would probably have to be fully closed for Health and safety reasons.
