Yeh, agree. They didn't build the foundations without a reason

There is absolutely no indication that this tower would go on hold, so all of these grim scenarios are complete speculation

That'd be an awesome April Fool's joke: log in, and every other development is on hold. Though, it'd be far more effort than it may be worth. But at least it's amusing to think about.

I don't care whether this design is brutalism or minimalism. The only thing "minimal" about this project is the pride the developers have for the city when the Drake Hotel was demolished, which was likely the most "brutal" destruction seen here since 9/11.

I wish that were true. Scores of stunning structures have been razed by savages in NY.

I would raze a thousand buildings, to building the stuff I design. I'm going back to school just to do that if nothing else.

Yes, those buildings pictured on the first page of this thread were beautiful.
I suppose New York is the spiritual home of capitalism, so you'll get this kind of sh*t happening.

No question of brutalism obviously... no raw exposed concrete here.

NY was once full of those kind of buildings along the avenues and was considered a beautiful city that could rival some pre-war European capitals. However, if they had not built modern buildings in their place, would NY have prospered and become a financial and commerce capital due to the limiting geography of the city and the density? Interesting thought. I suppose it could be argued that NY needed to make a choice between becoming an economic powerhouse or remaining a more beautiful city but less attractive to business. I suppose they could have built clusters away from the main CBD like London or Paris have done, but who knows if that would have been a success for the city in the grand scheme of things.

My opinion is that NYC is beautiful *precisely* because it tears down and builds anew.

The ESB, Chrysler, and countless others are in no danger of destruction. Their commercial and aesthetic value are too great. They stand, the others can fall, and new ESBs and Chryslers may be built in their place.

With exceptions, the overwhelming majority of Manhattan is preserved and has old structures. For the most part, the demolition of old structures occurs only in Midtown (and to a much lesser degree) in the Wall Street area.
