First part of the tower is about to be lowered down. The cleared lots of space on the front of the site yesterday so i wonder if they are lowering the tower pieces into the site first?

edit: Looks like its going straight onto its foundations

As expected, the tower crane is being set up. Yesterday, two portable light towers arrived, and today work began early. Two pre-assembled sections (each section comprised of 3 individual tower sections) arrived on two drop-deck tractor-trailers. The two sections have been bolted to the pads that were embedded within the crane footing. The climbing frame arrived on the third drop-deck trailer. Currently, the climbing frame is being prepared for lifting.

Lifting of the tower components require a two-crane lift. The tower sections arrive horizontally, but must be turned vertical for placement. The smaller crane (the tailing crane) lifts its end, while the larger main crane lifts its end higher, while the tailing crane swings in toward the main crane to turn the sections vertical.

The climbing frame has been unloaded from the trailer. It was lifted at the midway point, turned around, and is now on the ground. With the trailer gone, preparations take place for placement of the climbing frame.

Meanwhile, on Park Avenue, two flatbed trailers are parked with the butt section of the crane boom, and the crane gantry (yellow items), awaiting later assembly.

The climbing frame is being lifted into a vertical position, by the method previously described using both cranes. With the climbing frame now vertical, it being placed over the tower sections. Other components will be added: the slew ring (the crane turntable), catwalks, monorail trolley (a beam that sticks out beyond the climbing frame for holding tower sections to be placed, or removed). The climbing frame is the piece of the crane that is raised, and new tower sections placed within, when the crane is "jumped". It telescopes upward by means of the two black hydraulic cylinders that bear against climbing foots that are placed on a tower section below. With the climbing frame now in place over the tower sections, preparations begin for placing the slew ring assembly, that waits on the fourth trailer. The slew ring will be placed atop the climbing frame.

The cam sure does make for a nice show! Also shows how big some of the pieces of the tower crane are

This is great fun...drove by a few minutes ago and now am watching the cam

Anyone explain why the crane is offset a few degrees instead of parallel to the building...I was noticing the bolt points last week and wondering why
they were not square to the foundation, now it is clear that the tower crane itself will not be square to the building...reason? thanks Tim for posting the early morning shots

It is right that the crane is a bit turned, but it doesn't stand exactly next to the tower, it's a bit more to the left. So one side of the crane is directly headed towards the center of the tower.
btw no thanks for those shots, here it's 6 hours later so for me it was already midday.

I wounder what the black thing is they are working on now just out of view? The cab? Or slewing unit/turntable? or both?
Wish I could be on the street watching this instead of from my desk

Yep turntable...there it goes

What crane model is this? It has an unusual slewring bearing design.

You can see the name LOMMA on a board. And they are preparing the boom or jib I think.

Kycon,

The crane model is a Favco Favelle, possibly a 440 model. The slewing ring is integrated with a portion of the upperworks. The rear frame portion of the crane, which includes the counterweight, draw works (winches, engine), boom stops, and gantry are connected to the rear portion that is attached to the slew ring assembly (turntable). The boom butt section (that was seen on the trailer parked) is connected to the front. It is now being prepared for lifting off the trailer. The whole boom may be assembled on the ground, then placed later when the complete upperworks have been installed atop the tower. After the boom is installed, main hoist and boom hoist reeving will follow.

On Park Avenue can be seen the mid boom section waiting, along with another mid-section of boom. This crane will have a butt, 2 mid, and top boom configuration.

Update: the two trailers carrying the mid-section boom sections have backed down E.56 Street for unloading.

They continue to bring in new pieces of the crane. The trucks come from Park Avenue, turn first left on 56th and then move backwards to the closed section of 56th to deliver the piece so that the mobile crane lifting it doesn't have to move it above the truck cabin. This is fascinating
