And about 30 minutes later, the remaining cage has been placed, but in the south side, next to the southwest corner

Thanks for those screen shots. It was fun watching that. Pre-formed rebar for columns is interesting - I haven't seen that before.

It is 5 pm and they are still working. Love it. This is very up-tempo.

Neither do I, except in the rebar used for piles. In regular columns, generally they assemble the rebar in its place. I guess since that rebar is so thick, it is more practical to do it on ground and then lift the entire thing and place it.

Another thing that I haven't seen before, is that they did the entire formwork for the slab before building the columns that support it.

The rebar on this tower is so reminiscent of Mercury City Tower's.

So I guess now they will have to build wood forms around the column rebar that was just put in place?

yep.

Nice job, this prefebricated rebar. You can even see the connectors on the top for the next rebar cage.

I guess by connectors you mean what allows it to connect to the next set of rebar on top of it. As a neophyte I don't know how that works. So how does it work? Do they weld rebar together? Is there some sort of clamp?

I'd go with welding, though that is only my guess

This is how it's done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjsxk...0&feature=plcp

When joining cage and cage they simply place start of the cage 2 inside of the end of cage 1, layer over payer.

If the core is that perfect square, with rebar around,, what will be exactly in front of it,, closest to 56th, looks like there building that up, rite now about a story higher than the actual tower,, is that just to bring the site to street level, or is that some underground function? I know this is off topic, but if you go to Bing Maps and zoom in on Manhattan, on "bird's eye view" 3 clicks be4 full zoom, it shows the old Drake hotel, then when you zoom in the final 2 clicks it shows an empty work site. Just kinda cool because I never knew what existed there be4 this.

I really hate this design and its lack of proportion...
It is so tall and thin... not a good idea...
Absolutely hideous.

This, together with 225 West 57th, will be amazing 400m+ bookends on the Central Park South skyline, with Torre Verre and One 57 filling out the interior with their 300m landmark forms. Only in NY! It's good to be the financial capital of the world!

Plot size + need for height + number of apartments needed= this. Not too bad actually.
