If they would do something as small as that change, I would actually like the building, but no; they won't.

Yes, I have, but if you look at the area it is in, it could be done if it stretched, literally, all the way across from 56th Street to 57th Street.

If they did that, then they would not have the air rights to build to 400m, and that height will command higher prices per square foot.

It changes from a boring tasteless box, to a nice classic 80's styled building so bad they won't do it

Setbacks would have made it more interesting.

See above for a proper solution.

That's how this tower could have been apt indeed. Everyone can give it some proper proportions. Only that dabbler of an architect Vinoly obviously isn't able to.

well, at least it is unique! and new york is going the dubai route anyway (tall very thin towers), so i am happy it is rather simple like this than ugly like some buildings we have seen in dubai

A building should never (ever!) be unique, just for the sake of being unique.

If there's no artistic or cityscape value to it, a building (despite it's function) is redundant at best or disturbing at worst, as 432 Park Ave is.

"If there's no artistic or cityscape value to it" thats subjective, so why are you stating that 432 Park Ave is "redundant at best or disturbing at worst" as if its a proven fact? Sounds like it at least.

I have nothing against this tower. Indifferent. Seems cool that its something new but then again it is a little plain. My conclusion? Ill see how it turns out when its done. Renders can look totally different from the real thing sometimes.

I think without the setbacks, it looks best in all its simplicity.

The elegance of this building is in its simplicity and height. Setba is as such would ruin the tower. At best it would work if the tower were half the height, or if the site were2-3x as big.

On the topic of changes potentially improving this building, it would be infinitely better IMO if they simply took each "section" and rotated it 18 degrees from the underlying section for a gradual twist, and with 6 total sections (is that right?) the top section would align with the bottom section with the in-between sections rotated at uniform 18 degree increments. They could probably maintain the same basic core construction, it would create outdoor terraces for those double-height units, provide some overhang/shade for the units directly below them, and it would break up the monotony of a single super-thin box. They could even taper off the overhang corners to make it look less like stacked blocks.

I have no photoshop skills whatsoever or I would provide an example, but it doesn't take much imagination to picture it.

Im not sure why there is so much hate for this building. Firstly, its residential, so i bet the inside of it will be spectacular, and after all that's where the company is going to make its money. Its plain and simple, and this isn't always a bad thing in a city full of buildings trying to be unique.

Lets all wait until its fully complete before we make a judgement on how ugly or pretty it is.

No one would worry for it being plain and simple if it wasn't more than twice as high as most of its surroundings, pal.
