They could not remove the owners of these buildings?

They did remove the owner of Turnbull & Asset, which sits at No. 42 and is in the middle of the site. T&A will move to No. 50 E57th, which is the last townhouse, situated on the far east end of the site. (As shown in the photo, T&A's logo has been imprinted upon the building recently.)

So the white townhouse to the left will stay, and the two smaller ones will be razed. Robert, what will they build there, where the townhouses once stood?

A part of the tower?
A retail base?

Ooooooooor a plaza? (Please not)

The white townhouse will stay. Everything between it and the two buildings on the far right will come down, with the possible exception of No. 48, which is just to the right of the white building. CIM and the owner of No. 48 are in negotiations.

There will be a plaza and a retail cube. In addition to the tower.

Hm ... Now I understand. Thanks Robert.
Although these buildings have a very nice architecture, for this project is a pity that they remain there. Anyway, it's good that they build this building in the space they have.

If you want Dubai or Shanghai style ostentatious and pompous buildings to go up in NYC, your wasting your time commenting here. Everyone knows what kind of buildings NYC builds. No need to compare them to Asian cities as the situation in NYC is nothing like over there.

and how long have you been living in NYC for?

I'm born and raised in nyc...so you dont need to tell me about what new york is about. I could give you a 2 hour lecture on what new york is all about.

Coming back to the 'Cheap Showy indian designs' as you claimed, you seem to come from quite the redneck background yourself...do people refer to u as the 'hill billy' guy in nyc?

Think twice before you call indian buildings cheap, I love NYC and its skyline more than any other in the world , but I dont have stereotypical opinions as you do and I believe countries like India have their own class in buildings.

Coming back to the topic,

is there any update on the exact height of this tower?

The news article that Bob posted claimed it to be 1350 feet, however no design is revealed as of this day so the height could very well be different than what the article says

Does it really matter at that point what the height is? Anywhere from 1320-1380 feet is what we should be expecting if they're saying "1350ft". Maybe you should consider the design of the building instead of just "height, height, height."

You're not seriously suggesting that the owners of these buildings should have been kicked out if necessary, are you ?

Work Underway at Drake Site; Selling NY's Time Change
Friday, September 30, 2011, by Sara Polsky

MIDTOWN EAST—We're still awaiting confirmation of the future design of the Rafael Vinoly tower proposed for 50 East 57th Street, the former Drake Hotel site. In the meantime, a tipster sends along the above construction shot of what's going on at the site. We're still hoping for a glass cube (but we're open to all intel). [CurbedWIre Inbox]

It's amazing that NY is constructing several, mega-luxury, 300m+ towers with prices in the $7-$10k/sf range.

1 Hyde Park pales in comparison to these projects.

Anyway, NY and London (maybe HK) seem to be the only places with such vibrant, high-end markets right now.
