I see. They'll probably do that regularly.

Yep, I'm sticking to this theory too.

Setting up the crane now:

Notice in the background they're lifting parts of the crane up

NOT a cladding. Examples of this were posted back in December. We should know soon enough. And yes 57 st crane will be going up tomorrow.
Actually a smart idea given what has happened to one 57.
To clarify, concrete can still be used as a cladding. While I have no info if the structural concrete will be exposed, or if slabs of different concrete will be used as cladding, cladding is definitely the correct term. This is similar to how many older brick or steel structures were clad in sandstone.

Yup, several of us predicted this some months ago.

I think the question is...if this crane is just for the construction of the six story retail building or will it be used for the full height of the tower

You are correct...Architectural Concrete can be structural or cladding...it is not known yet (that I know of any way) if the structural concrete will be the exposed surface or if cast cladding will be added after. I am speculating this for a number of reasons... We should be able to tell once they take the forms off the columns facing 56 street...hopefully within two weeks

But the question that still bothers me is why cranes aren't placed parallel with the building.

Without cladding you might see marks or lines from the casing in the concrete surface. But we'll see.

I think they won't attach it at all. That's why they used thicker mast down, to make it more stable. Since it will be used only to erect 7 retail floors. That's my guess.
