Wait, is the site between the white and black buildings?

No, the bulk of the site is behind the buildings seen in that picture. Some of the buildings to the right of the white building are part of the site and are being demolished for frontage on 57th street.

Or the city could end up with a shit design which no one even has a chance to see before it is already standing a hundred metres tall on the skyline. I don't like NIMBYs obviously, but this still seems to me to be a very strange way to do things.

Well when the condo market is booming the developers don't have as much incentive to be diplomatic. Negative PR doesn't hurt as much and doesn't scare the investors away when the leases are all but guaranteed.

I guess that's all an anti-NIMBY weapon. If NIMBYies don't know the design, their NIMBYing has less weight. Even the 411 meter or 1350 feet figure might be false. Maybe it is taller than the roof of 1WTC as was thought before but they rather released this 411 meter info to prevent NIMBYing from the PA. Who knows ....

Yeah, because NIMBYs will totally care if it's 411m, 420m or 433m. NIMBYs just don't want it built.

The PA might care and the less NIMBYies the better for the project

What PA? The Nimby don't have a defined number. There could be 1 person or a hundred. And they don't try to fight every building, going up in the city.

But different NIMBYies have different ammounts of respect. For example when the owner of ESB was NIMBYing against 15 Penn he was definitely more dangerous to it than a NIMBYing homeless would be. It's all about reputation and money

The homeless don't have a back yard to moan about it. It's the residents that are the worst. In any city.

I don't believe its location is even appropriate for a supertall skyscraper. I'd rather have a skyscraper at half the proposed height built in that site.

Who knows what kind of catalyst a building like this, or the other midtown supertalls can/will be for the future deevelopment of midtown. See what a catalyst the former WTC once was and the new WTC is. Maybe more supertalls will be build in a foreseable time and this one will fit into the skyline then, who knows.

I am waiting until they release the official renders until i make a judgement. Judging without renders is dull. (imo)

Regardless of its design, I doubt anything 400+ metres tall is going to be built on that very small site.

the fact is, this site isnt that small. When the townhouses are gone, this site could house a tower with a footprint of ( 61m by 38m ) which is more than enough to build a 400m tower with todays technologies. And even with this relatively big footprint, the site wouldnt be fully occupied. The supertall towers in the tallest block in Dubai almost all have roughly 40m by 40m footprints.

The Penotominium's WHOLE plot is only 53m by 53m big and this tower was proposed to a height of 516m, and wouldnt occupy the whole plot!!!!!. Given Dubai's soil which is almost mostly sandy, and Manhattan's rocky soil, NYC has even advantages when it comes to building foundations.

I gave you some reasonable point, which make me believe that a 400m+ tower is possible on this site.

Anthony Malkin isn't Nimby. He's a businessman trying to protect the value, of his property.
