If there wasn't a profit in it, none of these buildings would be around.

That's what I love about New York (and Hong Kong), skyscrapers are a natural reply to the local factors, taller and denser skyscraper areas are a proportional sign of profitability, not like some developments in arab and asian countries, where the tallest skyscrapers are artificial landmarks put there by political decisions and they would be more profitable if they build 3x150m towers instead of 1x450.
I find this apparently boring tower more interesting than some awesome tower of the same height in Dubai or some secondary chinese city, where they have no reason to go so tall.

You are right, but we are dealing with already built city. Beautiful city. It is not like an open field or a dirty dump yard which can be turned into something new and nice. So any alterations in already existing fabric of this city should be done with lots and lots of taste. not just profit. You want pure profit - how come there are plenty of spaces that are vacant or slums in Bronx and right on the river front in Queens that sit there without anyone's attention. It can be another downtown if one of these greedy bastards like Macklowe will have balls and taste enough to think something like that. Instead he and others are like jackals of this city. Always looking for a building that can be possibly raised in order to build another nameless box sky high. History of this city and certain buildings are more important than their greed. Besides if you take out something as beautiful as Drake was, put something there that is equally beautiful.

This render that we have today has nothing but height. It lacks proportions of Aon or old WTC towers; it has virtually nothing to be called outstanding and it will be located in such an unusual lot that I have no idea how this will be anything of worth given the L shape of the place and all ongoing conflict with row-houses on the 57th street.

And please don't tell me Manhattan couldn't develop elseway. There are enough eyesores or even pretty much empty plots where such things could be pulled up. But yeah, that's not the way things are going ahead there, I know. It's all about the money.
Completely agree! Let's just accept what we have. I think developing new buildings within 5 blocks of the Metlife isn't too bad, that's always been a really progressive area architecture wise, hence the Metlife. But I think if they tear down any other WWII era buildings North of there that Park will truly lose its appeal. Already there is a thin glass building, somewhere on park (84th I believe). And that building takes so much away from the old buildings around it.

I like this building. Tall, simple, elegant.

Another note: Can we get over the fact that the Drake was demolished? There are literally hundreds of buildings similar to it in Manhattan.

I hope this one won't end up like 30 Park Place or 56 leonard Street, and be stalled for a while. But the design still bugs me, it looks mundane. I rather wait one or two years and get a master piece, then a 400m+ BOX on Park Avenue!

I'd love to see this being added into the construction forum soon. I mean, if they're pouring concrete already this has to be construction, not just preparations

No problem with that I found the Twins to be quite pretty and think that speaking about
boxes and masterpieces as being each others' opposite is a bit too much...

This will be a beautiful tower. It won't be as striking as Torre Verre or London Bridge, but it will be amazing. People will be happy when they see it rising.

Even though it's moderately plain;
ugly-ish Super tall 1350ft building > small/boring/no building.
