It's needless, arbitrary specificity. There's no difference between the western or eastern hemispheres, culturally or economically. And especially not architecturally.

The only reason to ever invoke it is to artificially make your achievement more impressive.

To think that if I was at the Top of the Rock, I'd be looking up at this building...

It's incredible, I tell ya!

I totally agree, they should have just said "one of the world's tallest buildings" because it is in the top 20 roofwise and probably just in general.

Well, to me it is simply 'the tallest building in New York' (or it will be) ! To me roof height is what counts... Or actually what counts the most is the usable floor or penthouse height that counts the most... An observation deck is quite good too, if it's open to the public.

For example Burj Khalifa has its highest usable floor at somewhere in 580 meters I think (correct me if I am wrong) But the biggest shame of that tower is that the highest point where audience is allowed to get is almost only at halfway of the towers actual height, at 442 I think... What a shame...

annoying and frustrating

The core climbing form begins its upward travel, on schedule after yesterday's core, and 53 (apparent) floor pours, but the cams fail to keep pace. When the core form reaches its next level, it will be just about out of view on both cams. The past two weeks of futzing around with the 53rd and 59th Street cams was downright insipid. Today, column rebar is being hoisted and placed, and at the current pace of construction, unless SOMEBODY at Eartcam gets with the program, 432 Park Avenue's activity at the top will exit our view.

Annoying and frustrating.

Definitely speeding up! last jump was last monday, march 31st, so just four days ago! Looks like spring has arrived with a faster pace of construction, as expected.

With this jump, the core is at 868 ft (264 m) surpassing the Trump International Tower, with a height of 860 ft (toupee included)
(BTW, if you just google the word "toupee" among the images, automatically you will get several picture of Donald's Trump famous hair piece )

With each core rise the Manhattan skyline gets more and more defaced.

Seriously, this building is shaping up to be just as ugly as the MetLife Building.

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative post.

53rd Street Cam is pointing in the wrong direction (again) and the 59th Street Cam isn't even working. However, 56th is, and there is at least one concrete truck on site, so we're probably having a pour right now.

This view is good.

And now it has only 10 buildings to pass, to become the 2nd tallest in the City.
+ it's now # 33 in the US.

So we keep the skyline as it is and sacrifice the continuous dynamic growth that has defined the city for the past century? I think not.

As for the building itself, when the huge glass panes are all installed it will look a lot better.

As simple as the design may be I don't think a 1400' building is anything to yawn about.

I suppose design wise but I've always been a sucker for black buildings. It reminds me of the top portion of sears tower without the setbacks.

Its sheer simplicity makes it awesome. 2001 Space Odyssey came to NYC.
