So, why didn't we see these buildings before .. Because the construction technique weren't there or because there weren't enough rich people around?

As I understand it - Elevator technique hasn't improved that much, and we are still waiting for the carbon elevators?
So, that in itself puts a limit on how needle-like a building can be?

So, it is something about people being willing to pay extra for the views.
And then Manhattan has a "lucky" underground that can actually support these needles? Without the structure collapsing because of shifty sands underneath?
You "just" need the structure itself to be stable?
After 9/11 you obviously also wonder what happens if you fly an airplane into them? Or whatabout earthquakes? Suppose they are designed to take a richter 5, but can they take anything bigger?

Well, I could spend days just looking at these marvels - And, come to think of it - actually, I have -
Even with some video to show for it, which encapsulates the feelings pretty well I think.

Manhattan street singers (Corner of Park Ave and East 51st Street, Midtown, NYC)
432 Park Ave as backdrop.
Really guys? Noone has a good link to an article (or post here on skyscrapercity) that explains more about the construction (issues) of 432 Park Ave?
What issues that had to be solved, and what new techniques that are used.

- Thinness - why now, and issues.
- Wind openings in the structure, where? And how.

Have been looking all over the internet for a good link.
- Surely, someone reading here must have an idea on where to look?

VG - That second photo really does show how slim this tower is compared with its height!

Well, you want huge spaces when you pay that much money. Keep in mind that the windows alone are 10 x 10 feet - you need a huge space to make this look nice. And it has a library, an open kitchen, dressing room as well as his and her mather bath and of course also an en-suite bathroom for the second bedroom. I would prefer that kind of floorplan any time over my 110 square meter 3,5 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment. But unfortunately I don't have the money

This may be just over a week old, but it does offer several sunset perspectives
