Average people don't care about architecture, and most of them seem to hate anything built in their lifetime, or just before.

average people also have no ambition. To appreciate something as architecture or business you have to be an ambitious person.

Hey guys, couldn't help but take my camera out on Ocean Parkway (Long Island) during the sunset. These were taken from a trail running alongside the parkway from about 30 miles out. In some of these if you look far left you can see the WTC and on the far right you will see the new 432 Park Ave building. The Park Ave building is MASSIVE. I even mistook it for the WTC while driving at first. That's how big it is. But it's way skinnier so that made it more obvious. Enjoy!

In this one you see 432 Park Ave and a plane headed to JFK…look how massive the building is!

The color will not stand out for long once the glazing protection is removed.

I would offer that average people don't fully understand architecture apart the simplistic functionality of space. Beyond that they'll have personal tastes (colors, forms, etc.) but as with all things unless it's your passion you won't have a deeper understanding of the craft.

However, most people I know favor modern architecture and then have romanticized ideals of historic structures. And even then only of iconic structures. If it seems they hate "anything built in their lifetime" it's only because so many forms and of such variety have been built in our day. To wit, they like just as much stuff as they hate. Granted, people often respond more quickly to stuff they hate, so that might be the more vocal minority.

I only raise that because your thought suggests an interesting paradox for architecture: Is it, and should it, be so unappealing to the masses that average people "hate" the majority of modern structures? Wouldn't that suggest architects are failing at their job?

A little hard to spot them from this distance & angle, but they're still there:

I think I own the trophy for distant shots on here these were taken with a 10 MP camera that is about 10 years old. I really wish I had one of those fancy cameras with great zoom and MP's…these would have been incredible taken with professional quality cams!
