Seems like two landmarks arguing about the skyline leadership...

Hey guys, took a few pix from the Whitestone Bridge (Queens) while driving around the other day

Zoomed in here…you can easily compare 432PA (far right) with ESB (middle) and WTC (far left). This building now dominates the NYC skyline which is a bit weird as a Long Islander. It hasn't changed this much in a long time.

Inside 432 Park Avenue
They show you the inside, but not like a modeled apartment like one57.

Video

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Fox 5 got a tour of 432 Park Avenue, the tallest residential building in New York. Workers are wrapping up construction on the Manhattan tower that no one can ignore because it is changing the skyline.

You can see it from nearly everywhere, even Long Island. Even through the haze, you can see it is taller than the Empire State Building.

$81 million gets you a full penthouse, 8,400 square feet, with floor-to-ceiling views of a metropolis, on the 93rd floor. Without question, the building is an architectural marvel. So tall and so narrow, it needs wind tunnels and 600-ton dampers to counteract swaying.

But while it's breathtaking from the inside looking out, the Municipal Arts Council is more concerned about the outside looking in. The council says 432 Park and four other buildings planned for the area will change Manhattan's landscape. As proof, the council points to 157 Park Avenue, which it argues casts a mile-long shadow across Central Park.

Video

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The video, at around mark 1:24, gave me the "shock and awe" feeling not felt before since seeing the old WTC on film. Something about the dimensions that gives it so much power, yet has a gentle vibe. Amazing.

It's looking so good and we still haven't seen the full minimalist effect.

And those comments from 'regular' people saying the building is beautiful is also heartwarming. It shows there are non-architects who see beauty in simplicity

But then they go and ruin the video with that stupid 'shadow' argument

Why is it 'ruined' ? I'm sure it's a ongoing concern for many New Yorkers.

Not everyone gets a hard-on for skyscrapers blotting out the sun, you know.

The problem is overexaggerated.

This went up so quickly, and now it dominates the midtown skyline, just wow.

Just watched that video and wondering where on LI they got that view…I'm thinking they were in a helicopter to get the totally uninterrupted view of the skyline there. Long Island is very, very flat so there are only a handful of places you can see the skyline even though it's definitely close enough to see it from most of the island if it was very hilly like Jersey.

Maybe the question has been answered before, but it's hard to find between 552 pages of messsages, but what's going on on the buildings corner? Anyone has a footprint of the plant? Elevators? Services?...

Some of the most awesome NYC skylines I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing them all. The pictures show off the bulk i would have always wanted to see in a skyscraper in Manhattan.

It's from 25 miles away so it looks faint in the picture. But it was clear as day with the naked eye.

liny631, if you're wondering, I took that from Sunnyside Blvd where it passes over the N. State Parkway.

Yeah, although it's a bullshit argument as the scary 'mile long shadow' will only happen in the middle of the winter, which they conveniently forget to mention. Not many people will be taking a sunbathe when it's 9 degrees outside.
Furthermore at any given location direct sunlight AND ambient light from the sky both contribute to how well a spot is lit up. If somebody created an illustration showing a full 360 pano and how much of the sky these towers will actually be blocking, it will probably come down to 0.01%...which is ironically the percentage of the population that can afford to live there.

Central Park is spectacular, exactly because it's in the middle of this huge, highly energized city with it's crazy towers. People go to central park partly because the views of the park with the buildings surrounding it are so beautiful. If it was somewhere on Long island with 2 story houses with vinyl siding surrounding it, I doubt anyone would be that interested.

No New Yorkers I know give a damn anyway. It feels to me that it's an issue for old ladies who have all the time in the world, can't really deal with the city changing and should move to the suburbs already if they want to be shadow free.
