So, it won't go any higher at this point? Change thread title to T/O then?

Only if they have poured the concrete to the highest point.

Amazing how quickly it rose. That's a benefit of it's simplistic design.

By looking at that picture I want the space around the Empire State to remain.

A lot of people feel that way. It's why 15 Penn Plaza wasn't built.

I wonder if a view can be a National Monument ? or whatever you refer as National Trust etc ? The view from the 'Top of the Rock' looking south with the ESB as the focus is wondrous...I know New York will continue to grow upward but how could New York lose that aspect forever ?
This building shows the future but some areas should have restrictions...then anyone owning property within cooee of the ESB will be pissed off... ( sorry, cooee and pissed off may mean different things over there ? ...yelling a long distance... and angry...)

No loss in my opinion... It wouldn't have added anything to the skyline.

While it's true there was opposition, it was mainly spearheaded by the owners of the ESB. 15 Penn actually was approved by the city by a wide margin. 15 Penn was put on hold at the developers decision because they felt the timing was not good. (End of cycle/credit crunch)

Recently, the developer for 15 Penn has decided to revive it and put things back in motion.

To be honest I'm quite tired of his color photos turned black & white. Ansel Adams would not be proud of those photos. Accomplished black & white photographers know how to take advantage of light and shadow, contrast, etc. These are clearly color photos with all the color values removed. Ugh.

Many forumers have posted far superior photos of this building.

(See how I turned a rant into a compliment?)

  1. The "stacked rectangles" design is much more apparent (and eye-catching) now that it has reached its full height and the majority of the windows are in place.
  2. The open-air windows on the mechanical levels add a sense of depth and texture to the design that doesn't necessarily jump out at you from even a short distance away (and isn't really noticeable at all from most photos and renders I have seen, or from my apartment about 4 avenues away).
  3. Up close, the shear depth (and crispness) of the window frames make the mechanical levels draw your eye, but because of the angle, you probably won't be able to see the drums from the sidewalk. From a distance, though, you don't really notice the depth of the window frames like you do up close, but (I'm hoping) the drums will be really noticeable. So, up close versus from a distance, this building is going to "feel" rather different, which I think is rather cool.
I enjoyed reading your comments; you've given us out-of-towners a perspective you don't get from photos or the media! thx.

As a photographer, I agree wholeheartedly. No reason for them to be in B&W and defeats the purpose, they are flat and lifeless. Sorry, its just an opinion, but still.
