If you remove the "rows" than each of those exterior 2x3feet pillars is in fact 1397feet tall and has to help support all 89 floors and all the furnishings and equipment in the building--as well as all the wind load.

Obviously this was engineered to work, but visually and intuitively it just looks unreal to me and downright frightening that a 2x3 foot pillar of concrete and steel is strong enough on the bottom floors to support 1300 more feet above it, and not only itself but extra weight latched on... and they are each only about 2x3feet thick...

The pillars to ancient Greek temples usually had a ratio of 6:1 in relative height to thickness. This building's ratio is 465:1 I've never been as impressed by concrete and steel as I am today.

And not to mention there are only 4 columns holding up the 57th street side, the other 3 of which are "floating."

there is a thick core and the outer perimeter's columns get progressively thinner as you go up, since they have to support less and less weight and have to be less and less heavy at the same time

finally, i can see my future kitchen window only $100 * 10^6 missing

According to the blueprints, the columns are 4 feet thick, with the openings 11 feet wide.

Looking at the building's width:

(columns) 7 x 4 = 28

(openings) 6 x 11 = 66

The sum is 94 feet, and the building is listed at 93.5 feet wide.

One thing's for sure, noone in that building can have sex up against the windows. Eleven million people will be watching with an unobstructed view.

Only thing I would do differently is have an outdoor elevator to the roof. Tourists could just get on from outside and not bother the tenants. It would be like riding the elevator at the end of the movie Vanilla Sky! Best ride ever.

Those buildings are straight out of Mad Men, and 432 Park could be where Don Draper lives
