November 2014: my first monthly update where the building is topped out

Compare current height to March, when I started documenting the building from this angle

I think one of the main reasons this tower ended up so nicely is because there was no cost cutting from the design. It looks the same as it did when it was first proposed. So it ended up with good looking concrete and (as far as we know) good looking glass.
Imagine if they had placed plastic spandrel UPVC windows instead of those large single elegant panes...

Vinoly's other skyscraper, 20 Fenchurch Street in London, was value-engineered and nimbified almost beyond recognition and then had to be covered by a steel curtain, since adding the balconies that prevented the infamous glare issue was cancelled. Now it looks terrible compared to what was originally proposed.

Moral of the story, don't cut costs.

There was barely anything to the design to begin with. It's minimalist simplicity probably helped a lot with cost and the pace of construction.

But there is high quality minimalism and cheapened out minimalism.
I'm just glad they didn't end up going with regular concrete clad in white plastic panels and UPVC window frames.

Congrats to top off. I would have liked it more with a real crown. Maybe like those iconic towers in lower Manhattan from the 30's but in a 21th century interpretation. How expensive is the tower btw?

When are they taking down that netting? It will look way better without it.

Didn't Mark Zuckerberg already buy the top penthouse? Or was that One57?

That was One57, although it was mostly a rumor which, as far as I know, was never substantiated.

The soar factor is unbelievable. I can't wrap my mind around it. It feels like a 600 meter building.
