NYC is already a restricted flight zone after 9/11 so the height restriction serves no purpose. If a company wanted to put up a multibillion dollar supertall in New York that exceeded 2000 ft, there is zero doubt that an exemption to the FAA code would be trivial to obtain. Or more accurately, the FAA wouldn't stand in the way unless pressured to for other political reasons. People that oppose such a tower might pressure the government to uphold the restriction to prevent construction because they oppose it for reasons other than flight safety. It would end up as a legal and lobbiest battle.

In my opinion, the lobbiests for the construction companies would win. They have deeper pockets. This scenario plays out all the time in regard to government ordinances and construction projects. If a project is big enough, it tends to get whatever exemptions it needs.

I took a few pics during my visit to the Upper East side yesterday. (Just in case you didn't know, the building to the right is the Bloomberg Tower.)

432 PA from Park Avenue and 81st (I think)

Bingo. There are buildings all over the city from all throughout the past and present with whacky zoning exemptions. Barclays Center in Brooklyn spent almost half its life in the design phase for this reason.

I don't know if you agree with me, but in one way those huge towers made this view look less impressive. 432PA and One57 dwarfed ofther towers so much that now they just look like low-rises. I know It just looks that way from far away and when you get closer this impression is gone. But still.

Let's hope other proposals for this place will rise as quickly as possible and fill the spaces between.

Many towers in New York ARE just high-rises, but after 432 PA was built this fact is clearly visible, because there's a 400m+ tower you can compare them with.

That's a great view of Manhattan. I love seeing all the different "layers" of buildings. Where is it taken from?

And I wasn't mentioning highrises at all, so I don't know why are you writing about them.
